It seems like Ford will be concentrating on small cars in the immediate future.
Execs say that there has been a convergence of elements -- hig gas prices which builds a demand for smaller cars with better fuel economy and affordable technologies for said vehicles. They see Americans buying small cars as long as they are comfortable and have the same quality offered in small cars sold in Europe.
So, look for more “exciting designs,” fuel economy, “excellent craftsmanship” and “innovative” infotainment technology.
Our take? Once you get pass the "hypespeak", expect Ford not only to roll out more fuel-efficient compacts, but curtail its SUV and truck line for a while. Ford CEO Mulally has been well-documented in his admiration of Toyota; it looks like his implementation of the successful Japanese automaker's techniques are bringing in the green. Or at least getting the company closer to the black in terms of profit.
