Mercedes SLK

The new SLK will arrive just in time for summer, but does Mercedes new roadster have what it takes to be called a mini SL?



Is this the car that finally gives the Mercedes SL a baby brother? The German company claims that the all-new third-generation SLK roadster is more luxurious, comfortable and fun to drive than ever. But is that really the case? We tried the new model ahead of its UK on-sale date in June.

The new SLK is certainly a more grown-up machine. From the moment you set eyes on it, you get the feeling that it really is a mini SL. It’s much more spacious inside, too, thanks to the fact it’s 31mm longer and 33mm wider than the car it replaces, and the main difference is that there’s a lot more shoulder room.

The new car is stiffer and lighter, too, thanks to more extensive application of high-tensile steel and aluminium. The latter is used for the front and rear cross members – as well as the bonnet and front bumper as before – while carbon fibre has been used for the rear body panels. Further weight is lost by using a magnesium frame for the folding hard top, which also features a new, faster electric mechanism.

There are three options to choose from when it comes to the new SLK’s roof. The the standard ‘vario’ roof, the same top in a darker finish than the rest of the bodywork, or the optional Magic Sky Control roof. The latter adds around £2,000 to the SLK’s price, but it’s an option that’s well worth it, particularly for UK buyers. Why?Because it comes with special glass that allows the driver to change the roof’s transparency. It can be darkened to keep the cabin cool on hot days, or it lets in lots of light in winter to give you a ‘roof down’ feel.

It works very well – indeed, you don’t even need to use the air-conditioning when it’s hot. All you have to do is to push a button above your head, which generates an electric charge that causes the particles in the glass to realign themselves in order to let light through. When this charge is interrupted, the particles reorganize themselves to block the light. Mercedes first used the system on the Maybach 62 limo, although it couldn’t perform the cooling function it manages in the SLK.

There are other highlights inside. The dashboard is sportier and more modern, courtesy of elements inspired by the SLS AMG supercar, while the boot is bigger, with a twin-height floor for bulky items. The rear-wheel-drive chassis features a revised ESP system that adds torque vectoring brakes that prevent understeer in corners.

Other tweaks include softer standard suspension. In addition there’s a Sports suspension setting and adjustable electronic dampers, which provide a smooth ride on poor surfaces and become stiffer under hard cornering.

From June, there will be three engine options.The SLK 200 with a 181bhp 1.8-litre turbo petrol engine, the SLK 250 with a 201bhp version of the same engine, and the 302bhp 3.5-litre V6 powered SLK 350. Later in the year the SLK 250 CDI arrives, packing a 201bhp 2.2-litre diesel, while the SLK 55 AMG, which gets a 422bhp 5.5-litre V8, joins later.

We tried the SLK 250, which does 0-60mph in around six seconds, yet returns 44mpg. It sounds good, too, thanks to a module placed in the throttle valves which selects pre-defined frequencies and delivers them to the cabin. It’s not all about the sound, though as the engine is responsive across the rev range, while the optional seven-speed automatic gearbox is smooth and precise.

On a twisty road, the chassis is impressively stiff, even with the top down, but the SLK isn’t the sportiest roadster on the market – our standard steel-sprung car felt more comfort-oriented. Perhaps the other suspension set-ups will offer a more engaging experience. But for now, this is a desirable drop-top that certainly feels every inch the baby SL.

Brabus Mercedes SLS AMG



Carbon fiber, handling and ultra lightweight! That’s the guiding principle of BRABUS for refining the Mercedes SLS AMG. The exclusive sport program comprises aerodynamic-enhancement components made from carbon fiber, ultra-lightweight forged wheels, an electronically adjustable smooth-ride suspension (Ride Control) suspension, a titanium exhaust system with bypass gate, and BRABUS leather.

Extremely light yet enormously strong carbon fiber identical to the one used in Formula 1 racing was chosen as the material for the BRABUS aerodynamic-enhancement components. The components were developed in the wind tunnel. They give the gullwing car an even more striking appearance while optimizing its aerodynamic properties. All components are available either made from clear-coated carbon fiber for a true racing flair or can be painted to match or contrast with the car’s exterior color.

The front fascia of the coupe receives a visual upgrade with the BRABUS front spoiler. But that’s not all: The spoiler further reduces lift on the front axle at high speeds which results in even better directional stability. The two BRABUS covers for the upper air inlets in the bumper lend the SLS an even more striking face while optimizing the cooling air supply.

BRABUS also lends the sides of the SLS a sharper profile. The new air outlets for the front fenders feature a modern design with integrated blue-illuminated BRABUS lettering. The illumination is activated via the keyless-entry remote or by pulling on a door handle. BRABUS also adds some more visual pizzazz to the rear appearance of the SLS with the BRABUS rear spoiler and the BRABUS rear fascia element that features custom-tailored cutouts for the four exhaust tips of the BRABUS sport exhaust system.

Forged wheels that were custom-developed for the SLS are also elementary for the electrifying BRABUS look. By choosing a staggered tire/wheel combination with diameters of 20 inches in front and 21 inches on the rear axle BRABUS further emphasizes the sporty character of the two-door car. The ultra-light BRABUS Monoblock F PLATINUM EDITION cross-spoke wheels are up to twelve percent lighter than the stock wheels of the SLS and are mounted in size 9.5Jx20 in front and in size 11Jx21 on the rear axle. The extremely wide high-performance tires in sizes 275/30 ZR 20 and 295/25 ZR 21 are supplied by BRABUS technology partners Pirelli and YOKOHAMA.

Another custom development is the height-adjustable BRABUS smooth-ride suspension (Ride Control). It can lower the ride height of the sports car by up to 40 millimeters (1.6 inches). At the push of a button the driver can choose between damper settings that offer a more comfortable or sportier ride compared to the production suspension. To complement this suspension BRABUS will soon offer the BRABUS Front Lift system. It raises the front of the car by some 50 millimeters (2 inches) at the push of a button to safely navigate steep parking ramps or other obstacles.

While engine tuning for the 6.3-liter V8 is still in the final development phase there already is an extremely lightweight BRABUS titanium sport exhaust system with four slanted exhaust tips. The tips have a diameter of 84 millimeters (3.3 inches). This exhaust system weighs 12 kilograms (26 lbs.) or 40 percent less than the production exhaust and adds an extra ten horsepower to the engine’s output. A special feature of this exhaust system is a pneumatically controlled bypass gate that is activated from the cockpit. The normal mode represents a “coming home” sound level that is quieter than the production exhaust. It appeals especially to the neighbors when the SLS returns home late at night. With open bypass gate the eight-cylinder engine sounds even sportier than with the stock exhaust system.

For the cockpit of the two-seater the BRABUS interior designers have developed exclusive accessories and masterfully crafted custom interiors. The speedometer with 400-km/h scale (250 mph) already hints at the car’s future performance with BRABUS engine tuning. An ergonomically shaped sport steering wheel is also part of the BRABUS customization program as are stainless-steel scuff plates with illuminated BRABUS logo and matte-anodized pedals. The BRABUS upholstery shop creates fully custom interiors for the SLS from top-quality materials. Customers can choose from different types of leather and Alcantara in any desired color and design to suit their individual tastes. BRABUS can also fulfill individual requests for the trim on dashboard, center console and door panels. BRABUS manufactures carbon-fiber and wood trim sets in any color and with any desired surface finish.

2010 Mercedes-Benz GLK350 4Matic


When you launch a vehicle during the year's most over-hyped estrogenfest, you're obviously trying to appeal to a specific demographic.

Specifically, not us. There's a reason we haven't taken a crack at the Mercedes-Benz GLK until the sequel to Sex and the City hit the screen. It was just too easy to pigeonhole this cute 'ute as nothing more than a boxy four-wheeled trinket – a cynical fashion accessory designed to compliment your rat-faced pooch and Manolo Blahniks (yes, we had to look that up).

But a funny thing happened on the way down I-5.

While blasting the stereo and hauling along at a decidedly Germanic clip, all of the stereotypes about the GLK's target demographic flew out its expansive sunroof. For as much as we dislike the mere idea of "entry-level luxury" – and in particular the scads of pseudo-SUVs that populate it – the GLK started to make sense. It's well proportioned, has adequate power and comes with nearly enough amenities to match its tri-pointed badge. We actually enjoyed it, even though our manhood might've taken a hit in the process.

More pics and details on the Brabus T65 RS Vanish


Before Brabus turned its T65 RS Vanish over to its rightful owner, it took the car to Glamor Shots for a round under the lights and here are the results.


The former Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series is now a twin-turbo, 800-horsepower brute with 811 pound-feet of electronically limited peak torque – the engine's uncorked potential is 1,047 pound-feet. About the only other limit the Vanish has is top speed: it's capable of 206 miles per hour, but is limited to "only" 200.

Your own SL65 AMG Black Series probably won't go that fast right now, but Brabus has good news: everything on the Vanish can be ordered up for your car. Except that "One-off" plaque, of course. Mercedes-Benz CLS - Break Concept -


Mercedes-Benz may not have invented the idea of a "four-door coupe" with the original CLS back in 2005, but the German automaker can surely be credited with the recent influx of such designs from automakers as varied and far-ranging as BMW, Jaguar and Hyundai. As such, you can be sure that Mercedes is keenly interested in reinventing the look it made so popular in the first place so as to differentiate itself from its competitors.


As we reported late last month, it seems likely that Mercedes-Benz will use the upcoming Beijing Motor Show to preview its next-gen CLS, along with the introduction of what appears to be a production-ready shooting break design. While the moniker is more often spelled 'shooting brake,' MB is keen to point out that the correct spelling is 'break,' as in breaking a horse that draws a carriage. Whatever the name, we're liking what we see from this concept.

From what we can see in these pictures, which we presume show a conceptual shape that's awfully close to what a future production model will look like, the Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Break seems to be a much more successful design than that of the BMW 5 Series GT that it will undoubtedly be compared to. We'd also wager that the rear hatchback and flat load floor would prove fairly useful in real life due to a suitably tall roof without too much downward slope.

Powerplants for the next-gen CLS are also previewed by this concept. Expect a turbocharged and direct injected 3.5-liter V6 engine with over 300 horsepower along with an uplevel turbocharged 4.6-liter V8 that puts out around 435 horsepower and over 400 pound-feet of torque. Those engines will reportedly provide a 25-percent improvement in fuel efficiency over the mills they replace and will route power to the rear wheels through a seven-speed automatic transmission.

Not powerful enough for you? Perhaps the 5.5-liter V8, complete with turbocharging and direct injection, in the AMG model will be more to your liking. How does up to 563 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque sound?

Expect to see a sedan (codenamed C218) in addition to this shooting brake (codenamed X218) when the next-gen CLS is finally ready for production.

Next-gen S-Class to go all-hybrid in U.S., save AMG variants


According to an Autoblog source close to the project, Mercedes-Benz will go all-hybrid with its next-generation S-Class lineup in America – with the exception of enthusiast-oriented AMG models. The plutocrat cruiser is expected to roll up in 2012, and it is understood that gas-only S-Class models will be the exclusive preserve of the company's performance arm – the German automaker is not talking about offering both regular and hybrid variants of the same model, at least in the States.


Presently, Daimler only offers a single gasoline-electric variant of its W221 S-Class – the S400 hybrid (the range's price leader at $87,950), and it incorporates a 3.5-liter V6 with a mild hybrid assist system for 295 horsepower and 26 miles-per-gallon on the freeway. Other models in current S-Class lineup all have more cylinders and power, including the 382-hp 5.5-liter V8 of the S550 and the twin-turbo 5.5-liter V12 of the S600. It is not immediately clear if company engineers plan to downsize the internal-combustion side of the next S' powertrain equation as a result of the all gas-electric strategy. While we expect Mercedes will offer a range of CDI diesel models in European market, no such model is apparently planned for the States at this time.

While the Daimler board has yet to sign-off on this plan, it appears to be all but certain. Interestingly, our contact indicates that S400 sales are going swimmingly in the States – particularly among Hollywood's green-minded glitterati, a contingent that our source maintains is abandoning their Priuses at a furious rate now that the model has become "something of a pariah" due to Toyota's recent troubles.

New Mercedes CLS Grand Edition gives sporty four door its greatest luxury yet.

With it's uique front lights, exclusive alloy wheels and Grand Edition badging, Mercedes is hoping that no one misses the most luxurious evolution yet of the popular CLS.

Available from March, the limited edition model offers a four strong petrol and diesel engine range, and gets a bespoke interior.

Highlights include alcantara headlining and leather seats. To finish, the Mercedes also gets high gloss wood trim on the dashboard, steering wheel and gearlever.

Standard equipment includes Mercedes COMAND multimedia system, parking sensors and Grand Edition badged floor mats.

Prices are yet to be announced, but drivers can expect to pay around £50,000 for an entry level CLS280.

An undisputed star of this year's Paris Motor Show, the ultra-stylish Fascination represents the very latest in the firm's design and technology.

Officially, the shooting brake is a blueprint for the all-new E-Class, and with its long, lithe bodywork, it also hints at the look of the next CLK. And as both of those models are set to remain top-secret until early next year, our exclusive drive offers the clearest view yet of what will be on offer.

In the flesh,the Fascination is one of Mercedes' most dramatically styled models ever. As well as a distinctive headlamp design, it gets a deep front grille and a sharp crease along the flank. At the rear are sharp-looking tail-lights and an integrated exhaust system. The hatchback tailgate - not confirmed for production - points to a new, practical evolution of the CLK coupé, and opens with the simple press of a keyfob-mounted button.

Inside, the cabin takes inspiration from the S-Class limousine. It's fitted with that car's COMAND multimedia control set-up, as well as safety kit such asnight vision cameras and collision avoidance systems.The strict four-seateralso gets a generous boot, lined with wood and chrome.
Mercedes says the radical shape was influenced by the Volvo P1800, as well as limited-edition Aston Martin shooting brakes of the Seventies and Eighties.

To get behind the wheel, drivers first need to press one of the flush-fitting door handles on the side of the car. The lever rises out of the bodywork, allowing you to grip and pull it. The door opens smoothloy, and its wide apperture means climbing in is easy.

Turn the ignition key, and the 2.2-litre Bluetec turbodiesel engine fires into life. It delivers 201bhp and more than 500Nm of torque, and provides strong in-gear performance.

The unit complies with the toughest emissions legislation, and will be offered in the new CLK and E-Class model line-ups from next year.
The cabin is ergonomically superb,with a comfortable driving position. What's more, the wide body and tall roofline ensure there's plenty of head and elbow space, while each of the four occupants gets lots of legroom and a great view of the road ahead.

On the move, the engine is refined yet responsive, and the seven-speed automatic transmission gives smooth and swift gearchanges. Standard air-suspension delivers a smooth ride, even though the model has enormous alloys.

The brakes felt reassuring this isunusual in our experience of driving such prototypes, and an indication of exactly how well developed the Fascination is.

For production, Mercedes promises this well rounded driving experience will be backed up bythe very latest safety technology. As well as offering a full complement of driver and passenger airbags, the car will be fitted with a feature called Attention Assistant. This promises to wake the driver upif it senses they have fallen asleep.

New traction control and an updated, three-dimensional navigation package are also included
While some of this technology is still under development, it's incredibly promising, and gives an exciting glimpse of the future. No wonder bosseschose to call this prototype the Fascination...

Mercedes' all-new supercar is winging in! This is the Gullwing and, as you can see by these exclusive spy shots, it's getting ready to hit the showrooms. Wearing less disguise than ever, and featuring production-ready 'gullwing' doors, the new flagship machine is entering the final phase of its development process.

Caught testing in icy northern Europe, this latest prototype is showing off some interesting hitherto unseen features including a strip of LED daytime running lights – just below the headlights – and production-ready brakes, which feature large cross-drilled discs. As for the body itself, expect styling to be influenced by the original 300SL Gullwing, with a large Mercedes star positioned in the centre of the grille.

Inside, the car gets a paddle shift semi-automatic gearbox, with at least six gears. There's still no word on what engine will power the flagship machine, but there are rumours of an AMG-sourced turbocharged V8 or even a V10. Either way, the Gullwing will boast 550bhp-650bhp, which will mean 0-60mph in under four seconds and a 200mph top speed.

When it arrives in mid-2010, just after a world debut at that year's Geneva Motor Show, the Gullwing could even be sold under the AMG brand. Production is likely to be limited to two years and around 6,000 models. Expect a price tag of at least £200,000.

The new-look Merc is almost ready for the road, and these are the best pictures yet of the sporty coupe.

It’s still officially under wraps, but this is the best look yet at the new Mercedes CLK. Captured barely disguised by our spies these shots show how the next-generation CLK will get sharper lines, more aggressive wheel arches and body creases inspired by the current C-Class saloon. The new Merc will also feature a redesigned front, incorporating new headlights and LED style fog lights.

Tipped to be labelled the ‘CE’ the new Merc will combine the sophistication and comfort of an E-Class saloon with the sporty good-looks of a C-Class coupe.

The cosmetic changes will also be accompanied by a mechanical makeover, featuring new technology such as Mercedes’ body control system ‘adaptive damping’, plus adjustable steering and body control settings. These improvements will aim to bring the new car on par with rivals like the Audi A5 and BMW 3-series.

Rear-wheel drive remains, with engines coming from the C-Class, ranging from the 1.8-litre petrol found in the C180 to the 3.0-litre V6 diesel unit on the 320CDI. Oil burners are expected to dominate sales, and prices should be close to the CLK’s rivals – starting at around £26,000.

The next-generation CLK is expected to emerge in 2009, with a range-topping CLK 63 AMG 6.2-litre V8 and a limited edition Black Series becoming available in 2010.

This is the Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series, the most powerful car ever to wear the three-pointed star.

Apparently not convinced that the current range-topping 518bhp SL63 AMG is hardcore enough, Mercedes asked in-house tuning arm AMG to come up with something a bit more raucous.

The result is an SL turned to 11, with a mind-blowing 661bhp and 1,000Nm of torque! And to make sure there’s no confusing a Black Series with the ‘standard’ AMG car, the interior and exterior are completely reworked – the new car shares only five percent of its parts with the SL63.


As you can see, the 95 percent of unique parts are focussed entirely on enhancing performance. The front and rear bumpers are redesigned, the former to suck plenty of fresh air into the engine bay to cool the raging power plant down, and massive vents behind the wider front wheel arches improve airflow. A retractable electric rear spoiler sits at the back.

A carbon fibre hood, magnesium alloy wheels and a partially stripped out interior – making liberal use of carbon fibre and alcantara – combine with the power hike to provide mind-bending acceleration. The Black Series will hit 62mph from standstill in under four seconds!

Mercedes kicks off the action at this year's SEMA show with three stunning GLK concept cars.

The world’s wildest Motor Show is go! Mercedes has helped kick off this year’s SEMA show off in stunning style with three special concept cars, based on the all-new GLK off roader.

Pride of place is this new convertible version called the Urban Whip. Fitted with 26 inch wheels, the four-seat, two-door convertible gets widened bodywork and has a slick looking interior.

While there’s no word on when the model might go on sale, it’s joined by a more conventional machine from Brabus, which gets a specially modified engine, and high performance wheel and tyre combination. Costing around £75,000 this limited edition model is available now from the famous tuning firm.

But while the Brabus model certainly looks impressive, its certainly not likely to be the quickest. That honour is reserved for this motorsport inspired edition, called the GLK Pikes Peak Rally Racer.

As well as a six cylinder engine, this hybrid model from Florida based RENNtech is fitted with a potent electric motor, designed to deliver extra acceleration.

Although not open to the public, Auto Express will cover this year’s event – which once again promises to deliver an eclectic mix of dream machines and performance parts.

Founded in 1963 the SEMA is the annual showcase for the Speciality Equipment Marketing Association, and pulls together hundreds of manufacturers and specialist tuners for a rarely seen celebration of the most imaginative side of the car industry.

Though the event is always unpredictable, Auto Express will be present to cover all the breaking news.

Mercedes ends McLaren collaboration


Mercedes-Benz will end its partnership with McLaren Automotive when its agreement expires next year. Together, the German automaker and the British sports-car manufacturer built the SLR premium roadster.

“The partnership ends in 2009, and it will not be renewed,” a Mercedes spokesman said.

Media reports say a new flagship premium roadster called the SLC will replace the SLR in 2010. It will be built by Mercedes’ in-house performance unit AMG at the automaker’s Sindelfingen plant, near Stuttgart.

Mercedes-Benz Hybridizing S, E and C Class Cars

The German automakers are -- finally! -- going hybrid full steam ahead.



Mercedes-Benz is bringing over its 2010 S-Class 400 BlueHYBRID to the U.S. in 2009 and it plans on following up with an E-Class hybrid the following year. Oh wait, there is yet another C-Class hybrid coming when the model is refreshed in 2011.

Dieter Zetsche, Daimler CEO, has announced Mercedes’ plans at the Paris Motor Show on hybridizing all of its cars in the future.

Will the midget Smart fortwo also get the hybrid treatment? That’s hard to say, but the U.S. will likely see more of the Chihuahua cars as Daimler starts dribbling them out in 2012 once annual production is boosted to 12,000 to 15,000.

Mercedes-Benz brings Security, Speed, and (Fuel) Savings to Paris Motor Show

Stuttgart – At the 2008 Paris Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz is presenting an exciting design study and two new, standard production saloons to demonstrate that automotive passion and environmentally friendly technology can complement each other very convincingly.





The Concept FASCINATION study interprets the emotional appeal of a coupé with new, surprising proportions, and combines a sporty and elegant design with stylish practicality. Other highlights include the new C 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Prime Edition and S 400 BlueHYBRID models. Both are particularly fuel-efficient, and occupy the peak position in their segment with respect to both performance and environmental compatibility.

A new four-cylinder diesel engine is celebrating its world premiere in the C 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Prime Edition. Developing 150 kW/204 hp from a displacement of 2.2 litres, this saloon accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 7.0 seconds and reaches a top speed of 250 km/h. Yet it consumes only 5.2 litres (NEDC) of fuel per 100 kilometres (CO2 emissions 138 g/km). The S 400 BlueHYBRID, which is due to be launched in summer 2009, is the first Mercedes-Benz passenger car model with hybrid drive. A combination of a modern V6 petrol engine and a compact hybrid module makes the S 400 BlueHYBRID the world’s most economical luxury saloon with a petrol engine (7.9 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC), CO2 emissions 190 g/km). Mercedes-Benz is also presenting the new S 600 Pullman Guard state limousine with integrated Highest Protection features in Paris. Spectacular dimensions in open-top driving are opened up by the new Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster 722 S. With an output of 478 kW/650 hp, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 335 km/h, this open two-seater puts all previous roadsters in the shade.

Sense and sensuousness – a compelling interpretation of a coupé concept

With the Concept FASCINATION design study, Mercedes-Benz has given fresh impetus to the long-established (although now rarely seen) "shooting brake". This meets two different requirements – a high utility value plus a coupé which appeals to the heart with fast, thrilling lines. Freed from the constraints of a specifications book, the designers have created an automotive sculpture with great aesthetic appeal which demonstrates Mercedes-Benz’s high level of design expertise.

Concept FASCINATION is a unique jewel of compelling automotive design, yet it still offers the benefits of a large luggage compartment. Taut, sharply contoured lines and finely sculpted surfaces

The Concept FASCINATION design study’s elongated body is dominated by the dynamic front-to-rear sweep of its lines which gives it a dynamically charged look, evoking movement even when the vehicle is stationary. This impression is emphasised by the long, frameless, side-window line which describes a continuous arc from front to rear, uninterrupted by a B-pillar. As a result, the large load space in the rear is integrated in the vehicle body cohesively and harmoniously while also increasing the impression of length and creating a remarkable sense of lightness.

New twin-headlamp face and rear with a pronounced V-shape

The distinctive front section of this gracefully built athlete is a picture of self-assurance. It remains loyal to the twin-headlamp face, but interprets it in a more contemporary way. The rhomboid headlamps which are set against a grey background reveal the fascinating technical details of the light units with LED technology.

Like the front section, the forward-sloping rear has a pronounced V-shape and features a spoiler, below which the third brake light is reflected in the rear window. Flat, horizontal LED lights which extend around the back, linking it visually with the sides, emphasise the width.

Exquisite material mix and stylish luggage compartment

Generous use of fine materials such as leather, wood and aluminium, as well as high-quality woven fabrics and many carefully crafted details, ensures that the sporty and stylish character of the show vehicle is also underlined by the interior.

The floor of the load compartment, which measures approximately one metre square and folds up on the left and right, is made of wood with brushed aluminium protective rails. The centre of the load compartment is occupied by a folding smoked glass table which rises out of the floor at the touch of a button to reveal a refrigerated compartment for drinks and champagne flutes.

C 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Prime Edition

Efficiency and driving pleasure on a new plane will be provided by the C 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Prime Edition from autumn 2008 – the first model Mercedes-Benz is equipping with a power unit from a completely newly designed diesel engine generation. This new four-cylinder engine produces 150 kW/204 hp and 500 Nm of torque from a displacement of 2.2 litres. The premiere model can accelerate from standstill to 100 km/h in just 7.0 seconds, on the way to its top speed of 250 km/h. Notwithstanding these exceptional performance figures, the Prime Edition only consumes an average of 5.2 litres of fuel per 100 km (NEDC), with CO2 emissions of 138 g/km. The engine impresses with its eager responsiveness and smoothness of operation. Exemplary figures in terms of power output, consumption and emission characteristics are achieved by the new engine thanks to the implementation of a whole package of innovative technologies. These include:

* a maximum ignition pressure of 200 bar,
* fourth-generation common-rail technology with a rail pressure increased by 400 bar to 2000 bar, as well as a new piezo-injector concept with direct nozzle needle control for greater flexibility in injection timing, leading to smoother running of the engine,
* larger, variable oil spray nozzles and variable water pump,
* dual-stage supercharging.

Fine detail work of the engineers reduces fuel consumption

In the C 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Prime Edition the new diesel engine is combined with a sporty six-speed manual transmission with overdrive. This, too, contributes to the great efficiency of the model. Furthermore, Mercedes-Benz engineers have drawn up an additional package of measures in order to achieve the most exceptional consumption figures. This includes further aerodynamic fine-tuning, tyres with reduced rolling resistance and adaptive power steering.

Sporty genes, state-of-the-art engineering, extensive equipment

The basis of the new vehicle is the C-Class Saloon of the AVANTGARDE equipment line, in which the sporty genes of Mercedes-Benz come particularly to the fore. All the pioneering technical systems of the C-Class are on board as well: for instance, the AGILITY CONTROL package with situation-responsive shock absorber control, the Intelligent Light System with five different lighting functions and the PRE-SAFE® anticipatory occupant protection system.

Mercedes-Benz S 400 BlueHYBRID

Mercedes-Benz is launching the S 400 BlueHYBRID, its first passenger car model equipped with a hybrid drive system, in summer 2009. The combination of a modified V6 petrol engine and a compact hybrid module makes the S 400 BlueHYBRID the world's most economical luxury saloon with a petrol engine.
The NEDC combined fuel consumption is 7.9 litres per 100 kilometres. This makes for the world's lowest CO2 emissions in this vehicle and performance class – 190 grams per kilometre. These exemplary figures go hand in hand with assured performance. The 3.5-litre petrol engine develops an output of 205 kW/279 hp, the electric motor generates 15 kW/20 hp and a starting torque of 160 Nm. The result is a combined output of 220 kW/299 hp and a combined maximum torque of 385 newton metres.

The compact hybrid module is a disc-shaped electric motor that also acts as a starter and generator. The system offers a double benefit, as it both helps to save fuel and increases driving enjoyment. This is partly due to the booster effect of the electric motor, as it powerfully backs up the petrol engine with a maximum additional torque of 160 newton metres during the high-consumption acceleration phase. The S 400 BlueHYBRID accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.2 seconds, and reaches an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.

The hybrid module also has a comfortable start/stop function, which switches the engine off when the vehicle is at a standstill – for example at traffic lights. When it's time to move off again, the electric motor almost imperceptibly restarts the main power unit. This likewise makes a contribution to fuel economy and environmental protection: because the engine restarts first time, and practically instantly, emissions are also minimised during the starting phase.

When the vehicle is braked the electric motor acts as a generator, and is able to recover braking energy by a process known as recuperation. Working in finely tuned partnership, the electric motor supplements the braking effect of the petrol engine and the wheel brakes to deliver a smoothly progressive braking action. The recuperated energy is stored in a compact yet highly efficient lithium-ion battery in the engine compartment, and made available when required. This complex system is managed by a high-performance control unit, which is likewise located in the engine compartment.

A milestone on the road to electrification

The centrepiece of the modular, very compact and highly efficient hybrid drive system is the new high-voltage lithium-ion battery, which was specially developed for automotive use and is the first such unit worldwide to be introduced in a series-production vehicle. In this way Mercedes-Benz is making a trailblazing contribution to the electrification of the car, with the S-Class playing the role of the technological trendsetter.

Major advantages over conventional nickel/metal hydride batteries include a higher energy density and better electrical efficiency, together with more compact dimensions and a lower weight. Thanks to space-saving installation in the engine compartment, where it replaces the conventional starter battery, the interior space and boot capacity of the S 400 remain unchanged.

S 600 Pullman Guard state limousine

With the new S 600 Pullman state limousine intended for governments, business and crowned heads, the world’s oldest automaker is continuing its unique tradition of building large, armoured, prestige limousines. The very first Mercedes-Benz automobile produced as a special-protection vehicle ex factory was a Pullman limousine from the Nürburg 460 series (W08) introduced in 1928. Who Needs Power Steering? Again?

Mercedes-Benz is issuing a recall on 102,954 of its M-Class sports utility vehicles. According to MarketWatch, the crossover's power steering pump can be damaged by a weak clamp on the cooling hose to the power steering fluid cooler. This can result in loss of power steering, and subsequently, control.

This is the second recall.

Our take,?Well, it’s not like power steering always existed. Still, this would be a bad thing to lose on the highway. Get it right this time, Mercedes.

Converting your Mercedes-Benz SL to an SLR

For those of you “poor” babies would could only afford a Mercedes SL when your really wanted the SLR, well, rejoice!




There is now a kit that will make you car resemble the achingly cool SLR while simultaneously making it less desirable than both.

Consisting of front and rear fascias, a hood, and a rear spoiler, the kit costs $59,700 (if you choose to forego the wing mirrors and SLR like door movement the price drops to $39,000). A larger wheel and tire package helps to further the look, but unfortunately the car comes no closer to performing like the SLR.

And in a surprising bit of sense, the kit is offered by Global Imports of Las Vegas. Truly fitting, as only in Las Vegas would cars go so far as to be something they are not; like their owners.

Our take? A cosmetic package only, and on that makes the high end SL bear a more striking resemblance to the lesser SLK than the range topping SLR.

Optimised thermal efficiency lowers the engine's fuel consumption

The 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine with variable valve control has been throughly re-engineered and improved. In the process the development engineers made use of the advantages of-fered by the Atkinson principle,where the expansion phase is longer than the compression phase. The intake valve is kept open slightly longer between the intake and compression phases, which improves the engine's thermal efficiency while reducing the specific fuel consumption and untreated emissions. A new cylinder head, different pistons and a modi-fied camshaft with different camshaft control increase the output by 5 kW/7 hp to 205 kW/279 hp – while reducing fuel consumption at the same time.
Especially on rural journeys and on motorways, the S 400 BlueHYBRID achieves a further efficiency improvement by moving the so-called operating point of the petrol engine to pro-duce a lower specific fuel consumption. The extremely high start-off torque made possible by the boost effect of the electric motor gives the driver a particularly exhilarating feeling of powerful acceleration, while fuel consumption and emissions are reduced.

The electric motor improves efficiency

The compact, disc-shaped electric motor, which is space-savingly installed in the torque converter housing between the engine and the 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic trans-mission, improves efficiency even further. This is a 3-phase AC external rotor magneto mo-tor, which develops a peak output of 15 kW/20 hp and a starting torque of 160 newton me-tres with an operating voltage of 120 Volts.
This compact motor also acts as a starter and generator, adopting the functions of both these conventional ancillary units.

Sophisticated interaction with the internal combustion engine makes numerous additional functions possible that positively influence the emissions and agility of the S 400 BlueHY-BRID in equal measure. Moreover, this disc-shaped motor effectively dampens torsional vibrations in the drive train, thereby further reducing noise and vibrations in the interior. The result is even more ride comfort for both driver and passengers.

"Boost" effect for even more driving pleasure

The overall system offers extensive benefits: firstly by helping to save fuel, and secondly by increasing driving pleasure with the help of the "boost" effect, where the electric motor gives powerful assistance to the petrol engine with its maximum torque of 160 newton me-tres right from the beginning of the fuel-intensive acceleration phase. This means that the hybrid drive system of the S 400 BlueHYBRID moves off powerfully even from very low engine speeds, as the torque curve impressively confirms. The additional torque of the hy-brid module also has a consistently positive effect during subsequent acceleration phases. In all driving situations, the driver therefore benefits from the interaction between the two units in the form of powerful responsiveness and muscular torque – but without an in-creased fuel consumption.

The S 400 BlueHYBRID accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 7.2 seconds, and reaches an electronically governed top speed of 250 km/h. The S 400 BlueHYBRID betters the already very favourable NEDC fuel consumption of the conventionally powered S 350 by up to 2.2 litres per 100 kilometres. CO2 emissions are reduced by 21 percent.


The start/stop function already saves fuel when rolling to a stop

In addition the hybrid module features an extremely comfortable and efficient start/stop function, which already switches the engine off when the vehicle is rolling to a stop at less than 15 km/h, for example before stopping at traffic lights. When it's time to move off again, the electric motor immediately and imperceptibly restarts the main engine as soon as the driver releases the brake pedal or operates the accelerator. This likewise contributes to fuel economy and environmental conservation: as the engine restarts practically instantly, emissions are also minimised during the starting phase. The vibrations and jolts that are unavoidable when starting with a conventional starter are also reduced to a minimum.

Steering and climatic comfort remain unchanged, as both the steering servo pump and the refrigerant compressor are electrically powered. Both systems therefore continue to oper-ate even when the vehicle is at a standstill with the engine automatically switched off. The intelligent control logic is able to detect whether the driver is executing a turning or parking manoeuvre. In this case the automatic start/stop function is temporarily deactivated, so that these manoeuvres can be carried out in comfort.

Every braking action generates electric power for the battery

When the vehicle is braked, the electric motor acts as a generator and uses a process known as recuperation to convert the kinetic energy into electrical energy. This energy is stored in the compact yet highly efficient lithium-ion battery, and made available when re-quired.

In the process the electric motor assists the engine braking effect of the internal combus-tion engine in two smooth, seamless stages: In stage one, on the overrun with no braking action, the electric motor acts as a generator and begins to recuperate energy. Stage two commences as soon as the driver lightly operates the brake pedal: the generator output is then increased proportionally, and perceived as heavier deceleration by the driver. Only when more brake pedal pressure is applied are the wheel brakes activated in addition to recuperation. In this way more electrical energy can be generated, while saving wear and tear on the hydraulic braking system at the same time. To make the best possible use of this double benefit, Mercedes engineers also developed a new braking system with a new brake pedal module for the S 400 BlueHYBRID.

Cleverly located control electronics

Dedicated control electronics are required to operate the 3-phase AC electric motor in the 120-Volt high-voltage DC network. The current converter is accommodated in the space formerly occupied by the starter. As the control electronics heat up as a result of electric currents measuring up to 150 amps, the system is equipped with its own, additional low-temperature cooling circuit.

Mercedes-Benz engineers have accommodated the transformer in the right front wheel arch, where it facilitates the exchange of energy between the 120-Volt high-voltage net-work and the 12-Volt onboard network – and also allows the option of emergency starting with jump leads if the standard battery should lose its charge. To ensure a consistently high level of electrical efficiency, the transformer is likewise cooled by a low-temperature circuit. The 12-Volt lead/acid battery is installed in the boot, and not only supplies the stan-dard consumers but also the monitoring system for the high-voltage components with en-ergy. Thanks to its interaction with the lithium-ion battery, it is considerably smaller in size and lighter than usual.

Tried-and-tested automatic transmission with a new configuration

Mercedes-Benz developers also adapted the well-proven 7G-TRONIC automatic transmis-sion to suit the hybrid drive, with newly programmed software for the transmission man-agement system. A newly developed auxiliary oil pump ensures reliable lubrication of the transmission even during phases when the internal combustion engine is switched off.

This complex system is managed by the modified high-performance engine control unit. This incorporates extensive functions, and distinguishes between operating conditions such as city traffic, rural journeys, motorway driving or slow manoeuvring.

Hybrid status is shown in the instrument cluster

The driver is also able to monitor the status of the hybrid drive system visually. The instru-ment cluster has a separate, centrally positioned, display showing the energy flow during boost and recuperation phases, as well as the battery charge status.

Seven-stage safety concept in addition to the Mercedes-Benz standard

As is usual at Mercedes-Benz, the development engineers gave safety aspects their very special attention. Know-how incorporated into the series-production car included long years of Daimler research experience with fuel-cell technology. The challenge lay in not only complying with all the worldwide and in-house legal crash test requirements, but also in ensuring the greatest possible safety for the electrical components. This safety system already applies in production, includes workshop personnel during servicing and mainte-nance, and also takes the emergency services into account when passengers need to be recovered following an accident.

Accordingly the hybrid technology of the S 400 BlueHYBRID is equipped with an extensive 7-stage safety concept.

  1. In the first stage all the wiring is colour-coded to eliminate confusion, and marked with safety instructions. This prevents assembly errors in production, and makes the regular quality checks easier to carry out.
  2. The second stage comprises comprehensive contact protection for the entire system by means of generous insulation and newly developed, dedicated connec-tors.
  3. As part of the third stage, the world's first lithium-ion battery to be used in a se-ries-production model has been given a whole package of carefully coordinated safety measures. This innovative battery is accommodated in a high-strength steel housing, and also secured in place. Bedding the battery cells in a special gel ef-fectively dampens any jolts and knocks. There is also a blow-off vent with a rup-ture disc and a separate cooling circuit. An internal electronic controller con-tinuously monitors the safety requirements and immediately signals any malfunc-tions.
  4. The fourth stage of the safety concept includes separation of the battery termi-nals, individual safety-wiring for all high-voltage components and continuous monitoring by multiple interlock switches. This means that all high-voltage compo-nents are connected by an electric loop. In the event of a malfunction the high-voltage system is automatically switched off.
  5. Active discharging of the high-voltage system as soon as the ignition is switched to "Off", or in the event of a malfunction, is part of the fifth stage.
  6. During an accident, the high-voltage system is completely switched off within frac-tions of a second (stage six).
  7. As the seventh and last stage, the system is continuously monitored for short cir-cuits.
Thanks to its compact dimensions and modular design, the additional weight of the overall system is only 75 kilograms - including the comprehensive safety systems. The superior driving experience for which a Mercedes is known is therefore ensured by this trailblazing and very versatile technology, which can be used for practically all Mercedes-Benz model series. Moreover, the payload remains unchanged at 595 kilograms.

The intelligent high-performance engine management system responds very sensitively to different driving conditions, and optimally configures the drive system for the relevant ap-plication, ensuring that both fuel consumption and emissions are kept to the lowest possi-ble level.

• At standstill the petrol engine is usually switched off, and therefore consumes no fuel. The electric drive of the refrigerant compressor and steering servo pump al-lows uninterrupted operation of the air conditioning and power steering. Comfort is in no way compromised, and is at the same high level as in all S-Class models.

• Moving off and accelerating away gently remains a smooth and comfortable pro-cedure. A driver who kicks down the accelerator for a brisk start benefits from the boost function of the electric motor, which produces considerably more dynamic acceleration.

• At constant speeds the intelligent electronics recognise situations such as relaxed motorway stretches, and automatically adjust the load point of the internal combus-tion engine to achieve a lower specific fuel consumption, thereby helping to save fuel and reduce emissions.

• When rolling to a stop the recuperation function is activated as soon as the drive is interrupted in any way (foot off the accelerator, engine braking). Once the vehicle speed falls below 15 km/h, the petrol engine is automatically switched off.

• If the driver brakes using the brake pedal, the electric motor initially begins to con-vert the vehicle's kinetic energy into electrical energy. In this case the electric motor acts as a generator, storing the kinetic energy as electrical energy in the lithium-ion battery. This process feels like a stronger engine braking effect to the driver. The conventional disc brakes at the wheels are not yet employed, saving wear and tear. The disc brakes are only activated if the driver applies heavy pressure to the brake pedal, braking the car together with the engine brake and recuperation.

• Once the driver selects "R" (reverse) in the 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission when manoeuvring, this automatically activates the Manoeuvring mode and pre-vents the start/stop function from switching off the engine at short, frequent inter-vals.

• The advantages of the hybrid drive system really come into their own in city traffic, with frequent stops at red traffic lights. Already switching off the petrol engine as the car frequently coasts to a stop significantly lowers the fuel consumption and emis-sions, while the long recuperation phases increase the battery charge. The electric motor ensures particularly comfortable and rapid restarting when the start/stop function is active.

• On rural roads there are frequent changes between boost, constant speed and re-cuperation phases. Depending on the nature of the route, large quantities of recu-peration energy are available to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. The more braking and acceleration phases there are, the better: uphill and downhill gradients, as well as winding, dynamic stretches, make for the largest savings.

• The hybrid effect is inherently less important on motorways, however thanks to specific modifications to the V6 petrol engine and the 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission, the driver is also able to achieve significant fuel savings and corre-spondingly lower emissions on fast road stretches like these.

The S 400 BlueHYBRID is produced at the Sindelfingen plant, together with the other S-Class models. The petrol engine, 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission and electric motor are first put together to form a hybrid module, then delivered to the production line as a unit. The market launch in western Europe is planned for June 2009; China is expected to follow in August 2009 and the USA in September 2009.

Modular technologies for the environmentally friendly future of the premium car

The new S 400 BlueHYBRID exemplifies the strategy of Mercedes-Benz, whose declared aim is to offer the brand's customers economical and environmentally compatible premium cars – without compromising in terms of typical brand attributes such as safety, comfort and a superior driving experience.

Major areas of development focus include modular drive technologies, which are used on a stand-alone basis or in combination depending on the vehicle class, operating profile and customer requirements – Mercedes-Benz has already described how this applies to the product portfolio in its "Road to the Future". In this context Mercedes-Benz also provides an outlook on the future of the internal combustion engine, with the innovative DIESOTTO engine in the F 700 research car.

Dedicated solutions for different requirements

The requirements for the cars of the future are complex and multi-facetted. This is because the world population, and therefore the demand for mobility, are set to increase drastically over the next few decades. At the same time the world's natural resources are becoming increasingly scarce and therefore more and more expensive for both consumers and car manufacturers. Depending on the world region, there are also sometimes very different le-gal requirements with respect to the environmental compatibility of vehicles. Examples in-clude the environmental zones already established in many European cities, or the legally prescribed quotas for emission-free vehicles in California.

These developments are already having a noticeable effect on customer behaviour. In ad-dition to economic factors - above all increasing fuel prices - the environmental compatibil-ity of a car is becoming increasingly important as a buying criterion. What is more, the day-to-day driving requirements of customers are becoming more and more individual and dis-tinctive: drivers covering long rural distances have different requirements from those who mainly or even exclusively drive in densely populated urban areas.

In the view of Mercedes-Benz, there is therefore no single technology that will provide the ideal solution for sustainable mobility in the future. Instead the company offers versatile, tailor-made solutions to meet these very varied requirements. The individual technologies deliver their benefits in terms of optimal fuel consumption and emissions in the specific ar-eas of application concerned. The approach taken by Mercedes-Benz envisages vehicle concepts with modular drive technologies, which ensure that customer benefits and envi-ronmental compatibility are always jointly emphasised.

Roadmap for sustainable mobility

The corporate development strategy is aimed at safeguarding the leading position in the premium segment on a lasting basis. To this end three areas of emphasis were defined in the roadmap for sustained mobility:

• Vehicle optimisation with the latest internal combustion engine technology – for ex-ample by downsizing, high-pressure charging, direct injection and the environmen-tally friendly diesel technology BlueTEC - as well as specific vehicle improvements in the areas of aerodynamics, lightweight construction and energy management (BlueEFFICIENCY), for example.
• Further efficiency improvements by means of need-related hybridisation in various development stages – from the start/stop function to the two-mode hybrid operating under electric power alone.
• Locally emission-free driving with fuel-cell and battery-powered vehicles.

The company is also actively involved in the development of clean and alternative fuels that do not compete with the production of foodstuffs - particularly in SunDiesel, which is obtained from plant waste.

An intelligent mix of drive systems as a solution for the mobility of the future

Mercedes-Benz has already brought numerous answers to the challenges of tomorrow to market. The most recent examples are the BlueEFFICIENCY models in the A-Class, B-Class and C-Class, the natural-gas-powered B 170 NGT and the powerful yet economical and clean BlueTEC SUVs, which were first introduced into the US market this year. A mix of modular drive systems, from the latest internal combustion engines with BlueTEC or di-rect injection, with or without hybridisation, right up to locally emission-free battery and fuel-cell-powered vehicles, provides all the conditions that will enable Mercedes-Benz to offer its customers need-related mobility to the brand's customary high standard into the long-term future.

2010 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Hybrid readies for U.S. debut in 2009

Sleepyhead Mercedes-Benz has finally woken up to the lingering scents of waffles and maple syrup that have already gone down Toyota’s gullet. While the German automaker may have lost its edge on the hybrid phenomenon, it's better late than never, right?





Mercedes has a new S-Class hybrid that will get around 30 mpg. Release date is currently pegged at June 2009 for Europe, and September 2009 for the U.S. and China. The hybrid is expected to start around $102,000, compared to the current S-Class which starts at about $88,000 and can go up to $145,000.

What makes Mercedes’ hybrid different? A better battery. It’s still lithium-ion but it’s a better lithium-ion battery. Mercedes insists there will not be overheating problems with this battery. The S-Class hybrid is not a full hybrid. Its electric motor merely supplements the 279hp 6-cylinder gasoline engine. Mercedes also tossed in some innovations that they insist will set the S-Class hybrid apart from Japanese competitors; but the innovations can’t be that mind blowing because they’re not willing to talk about it.

Mercedes was late on this one because it put too many eggs in the diesel basket. Don’t misunderstand, diesel does get better mileage on the freeway and comparable mpg on regular streets and it’s also greener, but Americans want hybrids because it’s “new.”

Our take? We almost feel bad. It’s like going to bed early and waking up at five to get in a line only to have the person in front of you get the last one.
