Aston One-77

Leaked image reveals all for new £1.2m supercar

Aston One-77

Never mind 007, this is Aston’s very own secret agent, the One-77…
These leaked images finally reveal the British car maker’s ultra exclusive super coupe, first shown as a cloaked concept at this year’s Paris Motor Show.

Taking design cues from the DBS and Vantage, the One-77 features an enormous front grille and wide wings with deep air intakes. The flanks get gaping gills too while at the rear is a racing-style diffuser.

Though official details on the Bugatti Veyron rival are still scarce, the strict two-seater is said to offer 700bhp from a 6.0-litre V12 engine, making it the most powerful model Aston has ever made.

Due on sale in 2009, the car will tip the scales at only 1500kg, meaning performance should be absolutely incredible.

But it’s not all about speed and power. Likely to cost £1.2million, the Aston will be one of the most expensive machines ever produced, offering an incredible level of personalisation with no two cars being alike.

Despite this – and the current financial uncertainty – interest has reportedly been very strong, with enough names listed on the order books to find homes for the car's first years of production.

Audi S4 Avant

Best ever S4 arrives with a supercharged V6 and seven-speed gearbox.

Audi S4 Avant

  • Rating:

    Price: From £36,000 (est)
    Engine: 3.0-litre V6, supercharged
    Power: 328bhp
    Torque: 440Nm
    Transmission: Seven-speed dual-clutch manual, four-wheel drive
    0-62mph: 5.4 seconds
    Top speed: 155mph (limited)
    Economy: 29.4mpg
Equipment: 18-inch alloys, electric leather sports seats, xenon lights with LED daytime running lamps
    On sale: November

This is an S express with a difference. It has been 76 years since Audi last used a supercharged engine in one of its cars. Instead, it has favoured compact turbos for some its most famous sporting models, including the legendary Quattro coupé.

But the blower is back in fashion at Audi, and there’s one under the bonnet of the latest S4. The new 328bhp 3.0-litre V6 is smaller and slightly less powerful than the 339bhp 4.2-litre V8 of the previous S4, but more importantly, it packs more torque – another 30Nm at 440Nm. And with 90 per cent of that thrust available from 2,200rpm, it promises to be a responsive drive. On paper, the figures are certainly impressive, with a 0-60mph time of 5.4 seconds and a top speed limited to 155mph. Thanks to the engine’s smaller capacity, there are improvements in efficiency, too, so the new S4 returns 29.4mpg combined and emits 224g/km of CO2.

Once on the road, all thoughts of economy vanish as you explore the engine’s power. The quad exhaust pipes emit a pleasing growl as the rev counter sweeps around the dial, and that torque really makes itself known – no matter what gear you’re in. Only a faint whine from the supercharger reminds you how it manages this feat.

But this car is about so much more than just a big engine. For a start, the S4 is available with Audi’s new seven-speed S tronic dual clutch transmission, which debuted on the Q5 compact SUV (see Issue 1,025), as well as a bespoke six-speed manual. The company expects the former to be the biggest seller in the UK, and we can see why. Full throttle upshifts are executed quickly, while the downshifts are accompanied by a pleasing blip of the throttle to smooth out the changes. Steering wheel-mounted paddleshifters complete the set-up.

Of course, no performance Audi would be the same without a quattro four-wheel-drive system, and the S4’s is biased 40:60 front to rear. Also available as an option is Audi’s sport differential – part of the new Drive Select Adaptive Dynamics system. This varies the torque across the rear axle, so that the outer tyre can be supplied with more power to help push the car through a corner, giving better stability.

The device also allows users to select from Comfort, Auto and Dynamic modes, each of which alter steering feel, throttle response, suspension, gearchange and differential characteristics. On a damp track, Dynamic mode allows a certain amount of rear end slip that’s still safe and controlled. The S4’s lowered suspension set-up feels tight and sure-footed, while the uprated brakes prove reassuringly strong.

While the standard A4 is a handsome car, the flagship adds some trademark S-style muscle. There are aluminium-look mirror housings, 18-inch alloys, two pairs of chrome exhaust tips and subtle badging. Overall it looks purposeful, but restrained, particularly in Avant estate form driven here, although it may not be aggressive enough for some buyers.

The interior boasts supportive but comfortable bucket seats, a multifunction sports steering wheel, aluminium dash trim and S4 logos throughout. Optional extras include Audi parking assist, lane change assistant and a powerful Bang and Olufsen stereo. It all adds up to an extremely impressive package.

Mercedes-Benz Hybridizing S, E and C Class Cars

The German automakers are -- finally! -- going hybrid full steam ahead.

Mercedes-Benz is bringing over its 2010 S-Class 400 BlueHYBRID to the U.S. in 2009 and it plans on following up with an E-Class hybrid the following year. Oh wait, there is yet another C-Class hybrid coming when the model is refreshed in 2011.

Dieter Zetsche, Daimler CEO, has announced Mercedes’ plans at the Paris Motor Show on hybridizing all of its cars in the future.

Will the midget Smart fortwo also get the hybrid treatment? That’s hard to say, but the U.S. will likely see more of the Chihuahua cars as Daimler starts dribbling them out in 2012 once annual production is boosted to 12,000 to 15,000.

Mercedes-Benz brings Security, Speed, and (Fuel) Savings to Paris Motor Show

Stuttgart – At the 2008 Paris Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz is presenting an exciting design study and two new, standard production saloons to demonstrate that automotive passion and environmentally friendly technology can complement each other very convincingly.

The Concept FASCINATION study interprets the emotional appeal of a coupé with new, surprising proportions, and combines a sporty and elegant design with stylish practicality. Other highlights include the new C 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Prime Edition and S 400 BlueHYBRID models. Both are particularly fuel-efficient, and occupy the peak position in their segment with respect to both performance and environmental compatibility.

A new four-cylinder diesel engine is celebrating its world premiere in the C 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Prime Edition. Developing 150 kW/204 hp from a displacement of 2.2 litres, this saloon accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 7.0 seconds and reaches a top speed of 250 km/h. Yet it consumes only 5.2 litres (NEDC) of fuel per 100 kilometres (CO2 emissions 138 g/km). The S 400 BlueHYBRID, which is due to be launched in summer 2009, is the first Mercedes-Benz passenger car model with hybrid drive. A combination of a modern V6 petrol engine and a compact hybrid module makes the S 400 BlueHYBRID the world’s most economical luxury saloon with a petrol engine (7.9 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC), CO2 emissions 190 g/km). Mercedes-Benz is also presenting the new S 600 Pullman Guard state limousine with integrated Highest Protection features in Paris. Spectacular dimensions in open-top driving are opened up by the new Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster 722 S. With an output of 478 kW/650 hp, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 335 km/h, this open two-seater puts all previous roadsters in the shade.

Sense and sensuousness – a compelling interpretation of a coupé concept

With the Concept FASCINATION design study, Mercedes-Benz has given fresh impetus to the long-established (although now rarely seen) "shooting brake". This meets two different requirements – a high utility value plus a coupé which appeals to the heart with fast, thrilling lines. Freed from the constraints of a specifications book, the designers have created an automotive sculpture with great aesthetic appeal which demonstrates Mercedes-Benz’s high level of design expertise.

Concept FASCINATION is a unique jewel of compelling automotive design, yet it still offers the benefits of a large luggage compartment. A particularly notable feature of the design is that the practical load space develops organically from the exciting and elegant lines of this lifestyle coupé, giving it its special charisma. Attention to detail make this design study an incomparable gem which conveys at one and the same time a sense of sporty forward movement and elegance, savoir-vivre and exclusivity of the highest level.

Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, commented: "This design study continues the long tradition of exciting coupés from Mercedes-Benz in impressive style. With its emotionally appealing lines, Concept FASCINATION offers a completely new interpretation of the coupé concept. Its aesthetic, dynamic looks and painstakingly crafted details ensure that this study meets the highest design standards."

Taut, sharply contoured lines and finely sculpted surfaces

The Concept FASCINATION design study’s elongated body is dominated by the dynamic front-to-rear sweep of its lines which gives it a dynamically charged look, evoking movement even when the vehicle is stationary. This impression is emphasised by the long, frameless, side-window line which describes a continuous arc from front to rear, uninterrupted by a B-pillar. As a result, the large load space in the rear is integrated in the vehicle body cohesively and harmoniously while also increasing the impression of length and creating a remarkable sense of lightness.

New twin-headlamp face and rear with a pronounced V-shape

The distinctive front section of this gracefully built athlete is a picture of self-assurance. It remains loyal to the twin-headlamp face, but interprets it in a more contemporary way. The rhomboid headlamps which are set against a grey background reveal the fascinating technical details of the light units with LED technology.

Like the front section, the forward-sloping rear has a pronounced V-shape and features a spoiler, below which the third brake light is reflected in the rear window. Flat, horizontal LED lights which extend around the back, linking it visually with the sides, emphasise the width.

Exquisite material mix and stylish luggage compartment

Generous use of fine materials such as leather, wood and aluminium, as well as high-quality woven fabrics and many carefully crafted details, ensures that the sporty and stylish character of the show vehicle is also underlined by the interior.

The floor of the load compartment, which measures approximately one metre square and folds up on the left and right, is made of wood with brushed aluminium protective rails. The centre of the load compartment is occupied by a folding smoked glass table which rises out of the floor at the touch of a button to reveal a refrigerated compartment for drinks and champagne flutes.

C 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Prime Edition

Efficiency and driving pleasure on a new plane will be provided by the C 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Prime Edition from autumn 2008 – the first model Mercedes-Benz is equipping with a power unit from a completely newly designed diesel engine generation. This new four-cylinder engine produces 150 kW/204 hp and 500 Nm of torque from a displacement of 2.2 litres. The premiere model can accelerate from standstill to 100 km/h in just 7.0 seconds, on the way to its top speed of 250 km/h. Notwithstanding these exceptional performance figures, the Prime Edition only consumes an average of 5.2 litres of fuel per 100 km (NEDC), with CO2 emissions of 138 g/km. The engine impresses with its eager responsiveness and smoothness of operation. Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars: "With the new engine, the C 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Prime Edition sets new standards in its segment with respect to performance, environmental protection and driving pleasure – in short: efficiency at a previously unattained level."

Exemplary figures in terms of power output, consumption and emission characteristics are achieved by the new engine thanks to the implementation of a whole package of innovative technologies. These include:

* a maximum ignition pressure of 200 bar,
* fourth-generation common-rail technology with a rail pressure increased by 400 bar to 2000 bar, as well as a new piezo-injector concept with direct nozzle needle control for greater flexibility in injection timing, leading to smoother running of the engine,
* larger, variable oil spray nozzles and variable water pump,
* dual-stage supercharging.

Fine detail work of the engineers reduces fuel consumption

In the C 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Prime Edition the new diesel engine is combined with a sporty six-speed manual transmission with overdrive. This, too, contributes to the great efficiency of the model. Furthermore, Mercedes-Benz engineers have drawn up an additional package of measures in order to achieve the most exceptional consumption figures. This includes further aerodynamic fine-tuning, tyres with reduced rolling resistance and adaptive power steering.

Sporty genes, state-of-the-art engineering, extensive equipment

The basis of the new vehicle is the C-Class Saloon of the AVANTGARDE equipment line, in which the sporty genes of Mercedes-Benz come particularly to the fore. All the pioneering technical systems of the C-Class are on board as well: for instance, the AGILITY CONTROL package with situation-responsive shock absorber control, the Intelligent Light System with five different lighting functions and the PRE-SAFE® anticipatory occupant protection system.

The C 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Prime Edition can be delivered in obsidian black, palladium silver or iridium silver. It is also optionally available in diamond white metallic. The edition is limited to 5000 examples.

Mercedes-Benz S 400 BlueHYBRID

Mercedes-Benz is launching the S 400 BlueHYBRID, its first passenger car model equipped with a hybrid drive system, in summer 2009. The combination of a modified V6 petrol engine and a compact hybrid module makes the S 400 BlueHYBRID the world's most economical luxury saloon with a petrol engine.
The NEDC combined fuel consumption is 7.9 litres per 100 kilometres. This makes for the world's lowest CO2 emissions in this vehicle and performance class – 190 grams per kilometre. These exemplary figures go hand in hand with assured performance. The 3.5-litre petrol engine develops an output of 205 kW/279 hp, the electric motor generates 15 kW/20 hp and a starting torque of 160 Nm. The result is a combined output of 220 kW/299 hp and a combined maximum torque of 385 newton metres.

The compact hybrid module is a disc-shaped electric motor that also acts as a starter and generator. The system offers a double benefit, as it both helps to save fuel and increases driving enjoyment. This is partly due to the booster effect of the electric motor, as it powerfully backs up the petrol engine with a maximum additional torque of 160 newton metres during the high-consumption acceleration phase. The S 400 BlueHYBRID accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.2 seconds, and reaches an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.

The hybrid module also has a comfortable start/stop function, which switches the engine off when the vehicle is at a standstill – for example at traffic lights. When it's time to move off again, the electric motor almost imperceptibly restarts the main power unit. This likewise makes a contribution to fuel economy and environmental protection: because the engine restarts first time, and practically instantly, emissions are also minimised during the starting phase.

When the vehicle is braked the electric motor acts as a generator, and is able to recover braking energy by a process known as recuperation. Working in finely tuned partnership, the electric motor supplements the braking effect of the petrol engine and the wheel brakes to deliver a smoothly progressive braking action. The recuperated energy is stored in a compact yet highly efficient lithium-ion battery in the engine compartment, and made available when required. This complex system is managed by a high-performance control unit, which is likewise located in the engine compartment.

A milestone on the road to electrification

The centrepiece of the modular, very compact and highly efficient hybrid drive system is the new high-voltage lithium-ion battery, which was specially developed for automotive use and is the first such unit worldwide to be introduced in a series-production vehicle. In this way Mercedes-Benz is making a trailblazing contribution to the electrification of the car, with the S-Class playing the role of the technological trendsetter.

Major advantages over conventional nickel/metal hydride batteries include a higher energy density and better electrical efficiency, together with more compact dimensions and a lower weight. Thanks to space-saving installation in the engine compartment, where it replaces the conventional starter battery, the interior space and boot capacity of the S 400 remain unchanged.

S 600 Pullman Guard state limousine

With the new S 600 Pullman state limousine intended for governments, business and crowned heads, the world’s oldest automaker is continuing its unique tradition of building large, armoured, prestige limousines. The very first Mercedes-Benz automobile produced as a special-protection vehicle ex factory was a Pullman limousine from the Nürburg 460 series (W08) introduced in 1928. Ever since, special protection vehicles from Mercedes-Benz have served the heads of state of numerous countries, as well as royalty, as automobiles worthy of their standing.

Like the famous Pullman railway coaches, the new S 600 Pullman Guard is luxuriously spacious and outstandingly comfortable. To ensure this spaciousness, the wheelbase of the special protection long-wheelbase S-Class was extended by 115 centimetres, making it 4315 millimetres in total. With an overall length of 6356 millimetres, this means that the S 600 Pullman Guard has truly majestic proportions. In addition, the new state limousine has an increased roof height in the rear for even more comfort and headroom. Following the Pullman tradition, four occupants can be seated in comfortable face-to-face seats behind a partition. The Mercedes-Benz Guard Pullman limousine therefore offers its passengers not only a maximum of comfort, but also a superbly appointed setting for discreet meetings, equipped, of course, with all the key communications and entertainment systems.

Newly developed on the basis of the S 600

The technical basis for the Pullman limousine is provided by the S 600 Guard, the top of the Mercedes-Benz Guard range. It is powered by a twelve-cylinder biturbo engine with a displacement of 5513 cubic centimetres and an output of 380 kW/517 hp with an impressive 830 Nm of torque. The suspension and basic vehicle structure have been modified to cope with the greater weight.

Furthermore, the S 600 Pullman Guard offers it’s demanding passengers effective protection from terrorist attacks. Its Highest Protection status means that it has been engineered to resistance level B6/B7, as tested and certified by state-approved organisations. Its armour resists military-standard small-arms projectiles and provides protection against fragments from hand grenades and other explosive charges. Additional safety features include run-flat tyres, a self-sealing fuel tank and a fire-extinguishing system.

In order to ensure that the vehicle offers outstanding protection, specialists in Sindelfingen with many years of experience in this field apply the principle of integrated special protection to the Pullman limousine. In effect this means that, rather than retrofitting the protective elements in the doors, rear wall, side panels, roof lining and firewall of a vehicle which has already been built, they fully integrate them into the body shell during the assembly process. In the process the entire passenger cell receives something akin to a suit of armour. The resulting vehicle offers hallmark Mercedes-Benz build quality combined with comprehensive Highest Protection characteristics, even in those areas where retrofitting would be all but impossible. The excellent ride comfort and superior handling performance of the standard models are also retained.

Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster 722 S

Spectacular dimensions in open-top driving are opened up by the new Mercedes‑Benz SLR McLaren Roadster 722 S. With an output of 478 kW/650 hp, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 335 km/h, this open two-seater even betters the standard set for open-top super-sports cars by the SLR McLaren Roadster. Both have a fully recessible soft top suitable for high speed driving, and are made from carbon fibre. This produces a very high level of safety and extremely high torsional strength. In addition to a higher engine output, the new Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster 722 S has an even more dynamic suspension setup and further aerodynamic improvements.

Despite the extraordinary performance of this thoroughbred roadster, its occupants suffer no compromises in terms of comfort and day-to-day suitability. With its decidedly sporty, high-quality interior appointments and manifestly obvious motor-racing genes, the new SLR McLaren Roadster 722 S, a limited edition of 150, is able to capture the heart of even the most discerning car enthusiast.

Who Needs Power Steering? Again?

Here's a sequel no automaker wants to repeat.

Mercedes-Benz is issuing a recall on 102,954 of its M-Class sports utility vehicles. According to MarketWatch, the crossover's power steering pump can be damaged by a weak clamp on the cooling hose to the power steering fluid cooler. This can result in loss of power steering, and subsequently, control.

This is the second recall.

Our take,?Well, it’s not like power steering always existed. Still, this would be a bad thing to lose on the highway. Get it right this time, Mercedes.

Converting your Mercedes-Benz SL to an SLR

For those of you “poor” babies would could only afford a Mercedes SL when your really wanted the SLR, well, rejoice!

There is now a kit that will make you car resemble the achingly cool SLR while simultaneously making it less desirable than both.

Consisting of front and rear fascias, a hood, and a rear spoiler, the kit costs $59,700 (if you choose to forego the wing mirrors and SLR like door movement the price drops to $39,000). A larger wheel and tire package helps to further the look, but unfortunately the car comes no closer to performing like the SLR.

And in a surprising bit of sense, the kit is offered by Global Imports of Las Vegas. Truly fitting, as only in Las Vegas would cars go so far as to be something they are not; like their owners.

Our take? A cosmetic package only, and on that makes the high end SL bear a more striking resemblance to the lesser SLK than the range topping SLR.

More details on the 2009 Mercedes-Benz S 400 BlueHYBRID

Mercedes-Benz is launching its first passenger car model equipped with a hybrid drive system in summer 2009 - the S 400 BlueHYBRID.

The combination of a modi-fied V6 petrol engine and a compact hybrid module makes the S 400 BlueHYBRID the world's most economical luxury saloon with a spark-ignition engine. The NEDC combined fuel consumption is a mere 7.9 litres per 100 kilometres. This makes for the world's lowest CO2 emissions in this vehicle and performance class - just 190 grams per kilometre. These exemplary figures go hand in hand with assured per-formance. The 3.5-litre petrol engine develops an output of 205 kW/279 hp, the elec-tric motor generates 15 kW/20 hp and a starting torque of 160 Nm. The result is a combined output of 220 kW/299 hp and a combined maximum torque of 385 newton metres. Moreover, the new S 400 BlueHYBRID is the first series-production model to be equipped with a particularly efficient lithium-ion battery specially developed for automotive use. This is another major contribution by Mercedes-Benz to the electri-fication of the car.

The new Mercedes-Benz S 400 BlueHYBRID is based on the S 350, and features an ex-tensively modified drive train. This encompasses a further development of the 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine, an additional magneto-electric motor, the 7G-TRONIC seven-speed auto-matic transmission specially configured for the hybrid module, the necessary operating and control electronics, the transformer and a high-voltage lithium-ion battery.

The compact hybrid module is a disc-shaped electric motor that also acts as a starter and generator. The system offers a double benefit, as it both helps to save fuel and increases driving enjoyment. This is partly due to the booster effect of the electric motor, as it power-fully backs up the petrol engine with a maximum additional torque of 160 newton metres during the high-consumption acceleration phase. The driver benefits from the combined action of these two units in the form of even more impressive torque characteristics and smooth, effortlessly superior acceleration.

The recuperated energy is stored in a compact yet highly efficient lithium-ion battery in the engine compartment, and made avail-able when required.

In this way Mercedes-Benz is making a trailblazing contribution to the electrification of the car, with the S-Class once again playing the role of the technological trendsetter.

Major advantages over conventional nickel/metal hydride batteries include a higher energy density and better electrical efficiency, together with more compact dimensions and a lower weight. Thanks to space-saving installation in the engine compartment, where it replaces the conventional starter battery, the generous interior space and boot capacity of the S 400 remain unchanged. The lithium-ion battery not only stores energy for the electric motor, but is also connected to the 12-Volt onboard network via the transformer to supply power to other standard consumers such as the headlamps and comfort features. The completely newly designed battery system consists of the cell block with its lithium-ion cells and the cell monitoring system, the battery management function, the high-strength housing, the cooling gel, the cooling plate, the coolant feed and the high-voltage connector.

Optimised thermal efficiency lowers the engine's fuel consumption

The 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine with variable valve control has been throughly re-engineered and improved. In the process the development engineers made use of the advantages of-fered by the Atkinson principle, where the expansion phase is longer than the compression phase. The intake valve is kept open slightly longer between the intake and compression phases, which improves the engine's thermal efficiency while reducing the specific fuel consumption and untreated emissions. A new cylinder head, different pistons and a modi-fied camshaft with different camshaft control increase the output by 5 kW/7 hp to 205 kW/279 hp – while reducing fuel consumption at the same time.
Especially on rural journeys and on motorways, the S 400 BlueHYBRID achieves a further efficiency improvement by moving the so-called operating point of the petrol engine to pro-duce a lower specific fuel consumption. The extremely high start-off torque made possible by the boost effect of the electric motor gives the driver a particularly exhilarating feeling of powerful acceleration, while fuel consumption and emissions are reduced.

The electric motor improves efficiency

The compact, disc-shaped electric motor, which is space-savingly installed in the torque converter housing between the engine and the 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic trans-mission, improves efficiency even further. This is a 3-phase AC external rotor magneto mo-tor, which develops a peak output of 15 kW/20 hp and a starting torque of 160 newton me-tres with an operating voltage of 120 Volts.
This compact motor also acts as a starter and generator, adopting the functions of both these conventional ancillary units.

Sophisticated interaction with the internal combustion engine makes numerous additional functions possible that positively influence the emissions and agility of the S 400 BlueHY-BRID in equal measure. Moreover, this disc-shaped motor effectively dampens torsional vibrations in the drive train, thereby further reducing noise and vibrations in the interior. The result is even more ride comfort for both driver and passengers.

"Boost" effect for even more driving pleasure

The overall system offers extensive benefits: firstly by helping to save fuel, and secondly by increasing driving pleasure with the help of the "boost" effect, where the electric motor gives powerful assistance to the petrol engine with its maximum torque of 160 newton me-tres right from the beginning of the fuel-intensive acceleration phase. This means that the hybrid drive system of the S 400 BlueHYBRID moves off powerfully even from very low engine speeds, as the torque curve impressively confirms. The additional torque of the hy-brid module also has a consistently positive effect during subsequent acceleration phases. In all driving situations, the driver therefore benefits from the interaction between the two units in the form of powerful responsiveness and muscular torque – but without an in-creased fuel consumption.

The S 400 BlueHYBRID accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 7.2 seconds, and reaches an electronically governed top speed of 250 km/h. The S 400 BlueHYBRID betters the already very favourable NEDC fuel consumption of the conventionally powered S 350 by up to 2.2 litres per 100 kilometres. CO2 emissions are reduced by 21 percent.

The start/stop function already saves fuel when rolling to a stop

In addition the hybrid module features an extremely comfortable and efficient start/stop function, which already switches the engine off when the vehicle is rolling to a stop at less than 15 km/h, for example before stopping at traffic lights. When it's time to move off again, the electric motor immediately and imperceptibly restarts the main engine as soon as the driver releases the brake pedal or operates the accelerator. This likewise contributes to fuel economy and environmental conservation: as the engine restarts practically instantly, emissions are also minimised during the starting phase. The vibrations and jolts that are unavoidable when starting with a conventional starter are also reduced to a minimum.

Steering and climatic comfort remain unchanged, as both the steering servo pump and the refrigerant compressor are electrically powered. Both systems therefore continue to oper-ate even when the vehicle is at a standstill with the engine automatically switched off. The intelligent control logic is able to detect whether the driver is executing a turning or parking manoeuvre. In this case the automatic start/stop function is temporarily deactivated, so that these manoeuvres can be carried out in comfort.

Every braking action generates electric power for the battery

When the vehicle is braked, the electric motor acts as a generator and uses a process known as recuperation to convert the kinetic energy into electrical energy. This energy is stored in the compact yet highly efficient lithium-ion battery, and made available when re-quired.

In the process the electric motor assists the engine braking effect of the internal combus-tion engine in two smooth, seamless stages: In stage one, on the overrun with no braking action, the electric motor acts as a generator and begins to recuperate energy. Stage two commences as soon as the driver lightly operates the brake pedal: the generator output is then increased proportionally, and perceived as heavier deceleration by the driver. Only when more brake pedal pressure is applied are the wheel brakes activated in addition to recuperation. In this way more electrical energy can be generated, while saving wear and tear on the hydraulic braking system at the same time. To make the best possible use of this double benefit, Mercedes engineers also developed a new braking system with a new brake pedal module for the S 400 BlueHYBRID.

Cleverly located control electronics

Dedicated control electronics are required to operate the 3-phase AC electric motor in the 120-Volt high-voltage DC network. The current converter is accommodated in the space formerly occupied by the starter. As the control electronics heat up as a result of electric currents measuring up to 150 amps, the system is equipped with its own, additional low-temperature cooling circuit.

Mercedes-Benz engineers have accommodated the transformer in the right front wheel arch, where it facilitates the exchange of energy between the 120-Volt high-voltage net-work and the 12-Volt onboard network – and also allows the option of emergency starting with jump leads if the standard battery should lose its charge. To ensure a consistently high level of electrical efficiency, the transformer is likewise cooled by a low-temperature circuit. The 12-Volt lead/acid battery is installed in the boot, and not only supplies the stan-dard consumers but also the monitoring system for the high-voltage components with en-ergy. Thanks to its interaction with the lithium-ion battery, it is considerably smaller in size and lighter than usual.

Tried-and-tested automatic transmission with a new configuration

Mercedes-Benz developers also adapted the well-proven 7G-TRONIC automatic transmis-sion to suit the hybrid drive, with newly programmed software for the transmission man-agement system. A newly developed auxiliary oil pump ensures reliable lubrication of the transmission even during phases when the internal combustion engine is switched off.

This complex system is managed by the modified high-performance engine control unit. This incorporates extensive functions, and distinguishes between operating conditions such as city traffic, rural journeys, motorway driving or slow manoeuvring.

Hybrid status is shown in the instrument cluster

The driver is also able to monitor the status of the hybrid drive system visually. The instru-ment cluster has a separate, centrally positioned, display showing the energy flow during boost and recuperation phases, as well as the battery charge status.

Seven-stage safety concept in addition to the Mercedes-Benz standard

As is usual at Mercedes-Benz, the development engineers gave safety aspects their very special attention. Know-how incorporated into the series-production car included long years of Daimler research experience with fuel-cell technology. The challenge lay in not only complying with all the worldwide and in-house legal crash test requirements, but also in ensuring the greatest possible safety for the electrical components. This safety system already applies in production, includes workshop personnel during servicing and mainte-nance, and also takes the emergency services into account when passengers need to be recovered following an accident.

Accordingly the hybrid technology of the S 400 BlueHYBRID is equipped with an extensive 7-stage safety concept.

  1. In the first stage all the wiring is colour-coded to eliminate confusion, and marked with safety instructions. This prevents assembly errors in production, and makes the regular quality checks easier to carry out.
  2. The second stage comprises comprehensive contact protection for the entire system by means of generous insulation and newly developed, dedicated connec-tors.
  3. As part of the third stage, the world's first lithium-ion battery to be used in a se-ries-production model has been given a whole package of carefully coordinated safety measures. This innovative battery is accommodated in a high-strength steel housing, and also secured in place. Bedding the battery cells in a special gel ef-fectively dampens any jolts and knocks. There is also a blow-off vent with a rup-ture disc and a separate cooling circuit. An internal electronic controller con-tinuously monitors the safety requirements and immediately signals any malfunc-tions.
  4. The fourth stage of the safety concept includes separation of the battery termi-nals, individual safety-wiring for all high-voltage components and continuous monitoring by multiple interlock switches. This means that all high-voltage compo-nents are connected by an electric loop. In the event of a malfunction the high-voltage system is automatically switched off.
  5. Active discharging of the high-voltage system as soon as the ignition is switched to "Off", or in the event of a malfunction, is part of the fifth stage.
  6. During an accident, the high-voltage system is completely switched off within frac-tions of a second (stage six).
  7. As the seventh and last stage, the system is continuously monitored for short cir-cuits.
Thanks to its compact dimensions and modular design, the additional weight of the overall system is only 75 kilograms - including the comprehensive safety systems. The superior driving experience for which a Mercedes is known is therefore ensured by this trailblazing and very versatile technology, which can be used for practically all Mercedes-Benz model series. Moreover, the payload remains unchanged at 595 kilograms.

The intelligent high-performance engine management system responds very sensitively to different driving conditions, and optimally configures the drive system for the relevant ap-plication, ensuring that both fuel consumption and emissions are kept to the lowest possi-ble level.

• At standstill the petrol engine is usually switched off, and therefore consumes no fuel. The electric drive of the refrigerant compressor and steering servo pump al-lows uninterrupted operation of the air conditioning and power steering. Comfort is in no way compromised, and is at the same high level as in all S-Class models.

• Moving off and accelerating away gently remains a smooth and comfortable pro-cedure. A driver who kicks down the accelerator for a brisk start benefits from the boost function of the electric motor, which produces considerably more dynamic acceleration.

• At constant speeds the intelligent electronics recognise situations such as relaxed motorway stretches, and automatically adjust the load point of the internal combus-tion engine to achieve a lower specific fuel consumption, thereby helping to save fuel and reduce emissions.

• When rolling to a stop the recuperation function is activated as soon as the drive is interrupted in any way (foot off the accelerator, engine braking). Once the vehicle speed falls below 15 km/h, the petrol engine is automatically switched off.

• If the driver brakes using the brake pedal, the electric motor initially begins to con-vert the vehicle's kinetic energy into electrical energy. In this case the electric motor acts as a generator, storing the kinetic energy as electrical energy in the lithium-ion battery. This process feels like a stronger engine braking effect to the driver. The conventional disc brakes at the wheels are not yet employed, saving wear and tear. The disc brakes are only activated if the driver applies heavy pressure to the brake pedal, braking the car together with the engine brake and recuperation.

• Once the driver selects "R" (reverse) in the 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission when manoeuvring, this automatically activates the Manoeuvring mode and pre-vents the start/stop function from switching off the engine at short, frequent inter-vals.

• The advantages of the hybrid drive system really come into their own in city traffic, with frequent stops at red traffic lights. Already switching off the petrol engine as the car frequently coasts to a stop significantly lowers the fuel consumption and emis-sions, while the long recuperation phases increase the battery charge. The electric motor ensures particularly comfortable and rapid restarting when the start/stop function is active.

• On rural roads there are frequent changes between boost, constant speed and re-cuperation phases. Depending on the nature of the route, large quantities of recu-peration energy are available to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. The more braking and acceleration phases there are, the better: uphill and downhill gradients, as well as winding, dynamic stretches, make for the largest savings.

• The hybrid effect is inherently less important on motorways, however thanks to specific modifications to the V6 petrol engine and the 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission, the driver is also able to achieve significant fuel savings and corre-spondingly lower emissions on fast road stretches like these.

The S 400 BlueHYBRID is produced at the Sindelfingen plant, together with the other S-Class models. The petrol engine, 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission and electric motor are first put together to form a hybrid module, then delivered to the production line as a unit. The market launch in western Europe is planned for June 2009; China is expected to follow in August 2009 and the USA in September 2009.

Modular technologies for the environmentally friendly future of the premium car

The new S 400 BlueHYBRID exemplifies the strategy of Mercedes-Benz, whose declared aim is to offer the brand's customers economical and environmentally compatible premium cars – without compromising in terms of typical brand attributes such as safety, comfort and a superior driving experience.

Major areas of development focus include modular drive technologies, which are used on a stand-alone basis or in combination depending on the vehicle class, operating profile and customer requirements – Mercedes-Benz has already described how this applies to the product portfolio in its "Road to the Future". In this context Mercedes-Benz also provides an outlook on the future of the internal combustion engine, with the innovative DIESOTTO engine in the F 700 research car.

Dedicated solutions for different requirements

The requirements for the cars of the future are complex and multi-facetted. This is because the world population, and therefore the demand for mobility, are set to increase drastically over the next few decades. At the same time the world's natural resources are becoming increasingly scarce and therefore more and more expensive for both consumers and car manufacturers. Depending on the world region, there are also sometimes very different le-gal requirements with respect to the environmental compatibility of vehicles. Examples in-clude the environmental zones already established in many European cities, or the legally prescribed quotas for emission-free vehicles in California.

These developments are already having a noticeable effect on customer behaviour. In ad-dition to economic factors - above all increasing fuel prices - the environmental compatibil-ity of a car is becoming increasingly important as a buying criterion. What is more, the day-to-day driving requirements of customers are becoming more and more individual and dis-tinctive: drivers covering long rural distances have different requirements from those who mainly or even exclusively drive in densely populated urban areas.

In the view of Mercedes-Benz, there is therefore no single technology that will provide the ideal solution for sustainable mobility in the future. Instead the company offers versatile, tailor-made solutions to meet these very varied requirements. The individual technologies deliver their benefits in terms of optimal fuel consumption and emissions in the specific ar-eas of application concerned. The approach taken by Mercedes-Benz envisages vehicle concepts with modular drive technologies, which ensure that customer benefits and envi-ronmental compatibility are always jointly emphasised.

Roadmap for sustainable mobility

The corporate development strategy is aimed at safeguarding the leading position in the premium segment on a lasting basis. To this end three areas of emphasis were defined in the roadmap for sustained mobility:

• Vehicle optimisation with the latest internal combustion engine technology – for ex-ample by downsizing, high-pressure charging, direct injection and the environmen-tally friendly diesel technology BlueTEC - as well as specific vehicle improvements in the areas of aerodynamics, lightweight construction and energy management (BlueEFFICIENCY), for example.
• Further efficiency improvements by means of need-related hybridisation in various development stages – from the start/stop function to the two-mode hybrid operating under electric power alone.
• Locally emission-free driving with fuel-cell and battery-powered vehicles.

The company is also actively involved in the development of clean and alternative fuels that do not compete with the production of foodstuffs - particularly in SunDiesel, which is obtained from plant waste.

An intelligent mix of drive systems as a solution for the mobility of the future

Mercedes-Benz has already brought numerous answers to the challenges of tomorrow to market. The most recent examples are the BlueEFFICIENCY models in the A-Class, B-Class and C-Class, the natural-gas-powered B 170 NGT and the powerful yet economical and clean BlueTEC SUVs, which were first introduced into the US market this year. A mix of modular drive systems, from the latest internal combustion engines with BlueTEC or di-rect injection, with or without hybridisation, right up to locally emission-free battery and fuel-cell-powered vehicles, provides all the conditions that will enable Mercedes-Benz to offer its customers need-related mobility to the brand's customary high standard into the long-term future.

2010 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Hybrid readies for U.S. debut in 2009

Sleepyhead Mercedes-Benz has finally woken up to the lingering scents of waffles and maple syrup that have already gone down Toyota’s gullet. While the German automaker may have lost its edge on the hybrid phenomenon, it's better late than never, right?

Mercedes has a new S-Class hybrid that will get around 30 mpg. Release date is currently pegged at June 2009 for Europe, and September 2009 for the U.S. and China. The hybrid is expected to start around $102,000, compared to the current S-Class which starts at about $88,000 and can go up to $145,000.

What makes Mercedes’ hybrid different? A better battery. It’s still lithium-ion but it’s a better lithium-ion battery. Mercedes insists there will not be overheating problems with this battery. The S-Class hybrid is not a full hybrid. Its electric motor merely supplements the 279hp 6-cylinder gasoline engine. Mercedes also tossed in some innovations that they insist will set the S-Class hybrid apart from Japanese competitors; but the innovations can’t be that mind blowing because they’re not willing to talk about it.

Mercedes was late on this one because it put too many eggs in the diesel basket. Don’t misunderstand, diesel does get better mileage on the freeway and comparable mpg on regular streets and it’s also greener, but Americans want hybrids because it’s “new.”

Our take? We almost feel bad. It’s like going to bed early and waking up at five to get in a line only to have the person in front of you get the last one.

2010 Mustang Performance, Interior & Exterior Details Leaked

2010_mustang_gt-badge.jpg

It was only a matter of time before someone leaked information about the 2010 Mustang and it seems like TMSBrad over at TheMustangSource has got his hands on some performance, interior and exterior details for the refreshed 2010 Mustang.

According to TMSBrad the 2010 Mustang’s 4.6L 3V V8 will get a boost in horsepower which is not new but has now been confirmed. Also the reason for the cowl hood in all the spy shots is due to a beefier strut tower brace. Other performance details include two performance packages being offered including an Acceleration Package and Heritage Performance Package.

Exterior details other than the new body panels, headlights, badging and side mirrors include 19″ wheels standard on GT models. Also a four pedestal spoiler will adorn the Mustang along with sequential turn signals being standard equipment.

The biggest news for the interior is it’s getting some color with all Grabber Blue cars having an optional interior package that includes Grabber Blue seat stitching and Grabber Blue inserts. There will also be a Dark Brown leather option similar to the King Ranch edition seats. Also an Orange colored interior will be optional, similar in color to the porno red leather but more Orange like.

Also on the interior we have learned the premium interior trim includes a chrome pony on inside door panel, Ambient lighting includes door handles, “Mustang” on door sill plates will use Ambient lighting. Also the MyColor will now include a color ring to contrast the gauges (ring around tach and speedo). Other interior features include a center console that hides cupholders with a flip open cover. In this interior teaser photo you can clearly see a cover hiding something.

2010 Ford Mustang Gear Shift Revealed

10-15-08: This week’s glimpse of the new 2010 Mustang shows off the genuine solid aluminum gear shifter. It looks pretty cool but it is actually very hot - particularly in the summer time. Yep, there is nothing like wrapping your bare palm around a hot piece of solid metal when your car has been parked on a 100 degree summer day. We hope Ford has given those of us who live in the southern states an option here, because we have to put a sock over metal knobs to keep from getting burned when we drive.

We will have to get our friends over at SteedShop.com to start offering a leather shift knob bootie for 2010 Mustang owners to keep them from suffering second degree burns when driving their new cars.

Bentley Continental GTC Speed

Soft-top version of Bentley's flagship GT spotted.

Bentley GTC Speed

The lid has been lifted on Bentley’s most powerful production cabriolet ever. This is the Continental GTC Speed – a 200mph bruiser with all the menace and performance of its hard-top sibling.

Spied here in the final stages of testing, we’ve managed to capture the GTC Speed without any disguise. Not for the self-conscious, the cabrio looks set to stand out with huge alloy wheels, vast twin exhausts and a neat boot spoiler.

Under the bonnet lies a 600bhp 6.0-litre, W12 engine, capable of propelling the GTC from 0-60 in under 4.5 seconds, and onto a 200mph top speed. In-gear pace will be incredible thanks to 750Nm of torque which is fully available from only 1,750rpm.

It will come at a premium though – expect to pay around £150,000 when it reaches showrooms early next year.

Infiniti GT-R saloon on way

Coupé will be joined by a four-door model

Nissan’s GT-R is growing, Auto Express can reveal. Sources in Japan have discovered that the hi-tech supercar will soon be available as a four-door – and it’s set to wear an Infiniti badge.

The flagship will rival the Porsche Panamera and BMW M5, and it uses the same four-wheel-drive chassis and twin-clutch gearbox as the GT-R coupé. However, it will have a longer wheelbase and place an emphasis on comfort and luxury rather than performance. Instead of the GT-R’s twin-turbo 3.8-litre V6, the saloon will have the same 5.0-litre V8 as the Infiniti FX50 SUV, tuned to give around 420bhp. That should still mean a 0-60mph time of five seconds and a top speed of 170mph. Expect the saloon to arrive in spring 2011.

High performance engine tuning modifications

Basic engine mods - Engine Tuning, an overview of engine modification & tuning options to improve performance. A brief introduction to the tuning mods to lift performance of your engine.

"Dont torque to me like that!"

Careful selection of internal engine tuning modifications can lift an engine from a docile supermarket cruiser to a rally spec dirt thrower.

While it is tempting to throw in every modification you can it's worth noting that they don't always work well together ie: a gas flowed head with a sport cam produces less power than it would with just one of the two modifications if the cam profile is not carefully matched to the head flow rate. You want to avoid ending up with a high BHP engine that has an unusable low torque output!!!!:

You want to avoid ending up with a high BHP engine that has an unusable low torque output!

So how do you make a car go faster? Aside from pushing the accelerator pedal harder there are some basic things that can be done. The internal combustion engine works on the principle suck, squish, bang, blow.

Air is drawn in to the engine (this is the suck stage) then it is mixed with Fuel and compressed – then along comes a bright spark and the Bang is achieved – releasing all that compressed energy which forces the air out of the engine along the exhaust this is the Blow stage.

It is possible to blow huge amounts of money on a car ruining it and ending up with a fuel drinking stodgy bone shaker that looks like a Christmas tree from last year. TorqueCars intends to assist you in deciding which mods to do and give a realistic opinion of what the car will end up like and we give a common sense guide on the pitfalls to avoid and common mistakes.

Track cars are rebuilt each time they are raced and they are set up for optimum conditions on the flat surface of the track - we have to tune our cars to work for a year without a service, run over potholes and speed humps and cope with a variety of weather conditions and loads. We need to establish the sensible mods that will cope with everyday driving but help you to get the maximum enjoyment from it.

Internal engine tuning modifications

Items include high compression pistons (increase the compression ratio) Low compression pistons (reduce the compression ratio and used with some turbo applications to prevent ignition problems and reduce the effects of turbo lag. Skimming the head also increases the compression ratio and to avoid detonation with low octane fuel a low compression piston is used.

Gas flowed head

The internals of the head are polished and channeled to allow the induction and exhaust gases to flow more freely. Inlet diameter and other measurements are taken and the best flow rate is calculated and the engine channeled out accordingly smoothing the internals and sometime a little turbulence is added to ensure a good air/fuel mix inside the combustion chambers.

Specialists can increase EITHER the torque output of the engine or raise the maximum BHP and EITHER improve or reduce fuel consumption sadly you can't have everything you have to decide what the optimum rev range that you use is then specific gains can be generated in that area. I had my head flowed for Torque gains, where peak torque now comes in almost from 1000 revs and I have also got much better fuel consumption - up by a stonking 10mpg (Other work has been done on the Head which also contributed to this gain)!!!

I do not seem to have more power in the higher rev bands near the redline but I never really go that high so my engine is perfect for my driving style. The angle of the inlet valves, enlarging the inlet and exhaust valves and increasing the lift on the valve can all aid the way gases flow into and around the head.

Re bore

The cylinders to create a higher capacity engine – check that your engine management system is able to cope or can be adjusted to suit this will also require work on the pistons as they will need to be switched for wider ones. A stroker kit also increases the cylinder capacity and typically comprises conrods, crank and pistons and generates more space in the cylinders for air and fuel.

Crank grind/polish

While the crank is ground it is worth balancing all of the other internals of the engine - your redline will be higher if the engine is balanced and a lighter polished crank gives less friction and releases more power from the engine.

Sport computer tuning

Changes the timing characteristics of the engine and is usually perfectly matched to your engine, fuel choice, driving style and car condition rather than the standard makers best guess setup which can cope with pretty bad servicing and poor quality fuel. Massive power gains and better fuel economy are available as is a high revs sport power setting and a low revs economy setting.

The downside is that you have to keep the engine in peak condition changing the plugs regularly and fastidiously following the service intervals. The cars which benefit the most from a sport computer are those which are fitted with a turbo or supercharger.

You can buy a standard plug in chip but it is much better to have the sport ECU set up specifically for your engine and have a custom map - again this can be set up to give better fuel economy, a lower peak torque cure, better acceleration or higher top end power. Some ECU's are impossible to reprogram without the manufacturers diagnostic equipment - the Rover MEMS is a point in case.

If this is the case with your engines computer you can add a piggyback device which gives false readings to your cars ECU and takes over control of Fuel, Ignition and boost control.

Port Matching

Port matching adjusts the diameter of the exhaust and inlet ports to match the profile on the manifolds which are nearly always bigger. (Don't take out the V groove as the torque will drastically reduce! The aim is to allow a smoother flow of air without the turbulence associated with having a step between the mating surfaces.

Camshafts

A sport or fast road camshafts increase the duration of the valves opening and closing the engine is best suited to higher revs and can cause a stodgy tick over. Cam profiles vary from fast road to full race. One of the most cost effective and noticeable modifications you can do. We explain the many profiles available and the typical effect it will have on performance.

Forced air induction.

A turbo or supercharger forces air into the engine at a greater pressure and more air and more fuel = bigger bang = more power. Turbo chargers use the force of the expelled exhaust to drive a turbine and ram fresh air into the engine. Superchargers however are driven by the engines drivetrain.

Turbos vs superchargers

Superchargers give an increase at all revs the higher the revs the more induction charge there is and turbochargers have the same effect although lower down there is what is known as turbo lag – where the effect of the turbo cuts in at a higher rev range.

Turbo chargers produce more power than supercharges but most modern engine would need an engine management computer upgrade to be able to handle the altered air flow – the fuel injectors would need to run at a higher pressure to get the fuel into the now pressurised combustion chamber.

Fuelling

When you increase the power of an engine you will need to increase the amount of fuel it has to work with. You will usually need to uprate the injectors and fuel pump. The mix ratio of air to fuel needs to be closely balanced and most engine tuning projects will involved increasing the amount of fuel and air combusted in the engine.

Audi Q7 VI2 TDI

Huge SUV gets world’s most powerful diesel

Audi Q7
  • Rating:

When it comes to performance diesels, Audi is king. Its R10 TDI sportscar is tearing up race tracks across the globe, while the R8 supercar will get V12 diesel power in 2010.

However, you won’t have to wait that long to get a first taste of the 6.0-litre powerplant, as it appears in the firm’s flagship Q7 SUV in January. That means the monster seven-seater not only has the biggest diesel engine available in a production car, but also the most powerful by some margin.

As well as using the R8’s motor, the Q7 benefits from technology found in the R10 Le Mans car. The performance statistics are as impressive as its heritage, too. The 6.0-litre V12 delivers 493bhp, and the torque output is an enormous 1,000Nm! These figures mean the two-and-a-half tonne SUV manages to accelerate from 0-62mph in 5.5 seconds – and it feels even faster than that!

Turn the key, and the V12 lets out a deep rumble comparable to a petrol V8. And with all 1,000Nm of torque available from as low as 1,750rpm, even the lightest prod of the accelerator results in instant thrust.

Due to the huge amount of power available, the needle of the rev counter seems to hit the limiter in no time, resulting in the need for constant gearchanges using the six-speed Tiptronic auto. The manic Q7 isn’t without its faults, though. Turning into corners with any speed betrays its weight, and grip suffers as a result.

The steering doesn’t inspire much confidence, either, as it lacks feel. The ride, however, is smooth and comfortable.

Inside, it’s hard to fault the luxurious cabin. The driving position is high, commanding and comfortable, with well placed switchgear and first-rate quality. All this luxury and performance comes at a premium, though. The V12 Q7 costs £96,295 – nearly twice the price of the V8 TDI model below it! It’ll certainly be exclusive, however, as Audi only plans to sell 40 in the UK.

Mazda 3

We get early taste of japan’s all-new hatch

  • Rating:

The Renault Mégane (opposite) is a big improvement over the outgoing model, but it needs to be. Not only will it go head-to-head with the latest VW Golf, it will also have to contend with Mazda’s new 3.

The first official pictures of the Japanese model appear in this issue (Page 10) – but before they were released, Auto Express was given exclusive access to drive a near production-ready prototype.

Expectations are high, as it uses Ford Focus underpinnings, has a lightweight construction and is powered by a range of hi-tech new engines.

Although our car was heavily disguised on the outside, the interior is spacious, while the Honda Civic-influenced dashboard is stylish and well laid-out.

We tried two new engines: the 150bhp 2.0-litre direct-injection petrol and 2.2 diesel. While the former is smooth and responsive, the oil-burner is incredibly refined and delivers mid-range pace to match the current MPS hot hatch.

Better still, in corners the well weighted, direct steering combines with strong grip and great body control. Even in this unfinished state, the 3 is clearly ready to rival the class leaders.

Mazda aims to bring Hydrogen to Consumers by 2013

Way back when, Mazda was the first -- and is now the only -- car manufacturer to offer a rotary engine. The company announced that the design of the rotary engine makes it well suited to be powered by hydrogen as a combustible fuel.

Mazda has already built hydrogen powered RX8s and Mazda5s. Both are currently being tested.

As a result, execs with Mazda are saying that the car company will be developing a hydrogen powered rotary engine but it won’t be in production for at least five years.

Our take? Nice idea, but Mazda is quite mum about who'll build the fueling stations.

Mazda takes Trans-Siberian Railroad Ride for Russian Buyers

When you’re the biggest country in the world, getting something from one end to the other can be a complicated chore.

Western Russia is a hungry market for Japanese cars, but getting the cars there gives Japanese automakers fits. First you take a boat to Germany, and then another boat to Finland and then a long jaunt inland to the destined markets—a trip that totals about 40 days. Talk about overhead.

It’s a fairly straight shot, getting cars from Japan to Russia, but then you have all that land in-between standing in the way. So after building a few more terminals and hundreds of tests, Mazda has announced that they’re ready to begin shipping via the Trans-Siberian Railroad. They will be the first major manufacturer to do so.

The Trans-Siberian Railroad spans 5,791 miles across Russia. Mazda hopes to ship 9,000 vehicles via the rail line in the next year. This method of shipping will cut transport times by about 30 days compared to boat.

You don’t run to where there is profit to be made; you dash. Western Russia should be ready for an influx of Mazda3s, CX-7s and CX-9s.

2009 Mazda3 to debut at 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show

IRVINE, Calif. - Mazda Motor Corporation has confirmed that the sedan version of the all-new MAZDA3 (known as Mazda Axela in Japan), fully redesigned for the first time in five years, will be revealed at the Los Angeles Auto Show*1 on November 19, 2008.

The covers will be pulled off during Mazda's press conference at 12:20 p.m. (local time) revealing the all-new MAZDA3, the latest evolution of Mazda's Zoom-Zoom spirit.

Every element of the all-new MAZDA3 has been developed for heightened exhilaration, with a more refined sporty ride, top-class fuel economy and quietness. Environmental and safety features,¡¡based on Mazda's long-term "Sustainable Zoom-Zoom" vision, aim to achieve a balance with fun-to-drive. Add in a new expressive face and Mazda's dynamic design elements, and the all-new MAZDA3 is everything a driver could ask for in a sports compact.

The brand-new version of Mazda's best-selling sports compact carries forward the heritage of Mazda and the pedigree of the current MAZDA3. Since its launch in 2003, the current MAZDA3 has sold approx. 1.8 million vehicles*2 in over 100 countries and has won more than 90 global motoring awards*3 to date. The MAZDA3 accounts for almost one in three Mazdas sold every year.

Following the world debut of the North American specification sedan with 2.0- and 2.5-liter engines at the show, the five-door hatchback version will be revealed in line with Mazda's global sales schedule.

Mazda Kiyora to debut at Paris Motor Show

The Paris Auto Show scheduled for October will be a very interesting event to attend.

One vehicle to debut will be a “city” car concept from Mazda. Called the Kiyora, the car would probably compete with the Volkswagen Up! and Toyota iQ minicars. It is expected to include a 4-cylinder, direct injection engine, and stop-start technology.

Our take? We suspect Mazda's keeping close tabs on the smart car and its sales before fully committing to the city car concept.

Ford Competitors Would Pay Handsomely for Mazda Stake

Ford Motor Co. has dumped a number of its brands in recent years including Aston Martin, Jaguar, and Land Rover

Now there is buzz that Ford will be unloading Mazda.
Currently Ford owns 33.9 percent of Mazda which gives it control of the company. It is said that the stake is worth $2.5 billion on the open market. That is slightly more than Ford garnered in its deal with Tata Motors for Jaguar and Land Rover but it is less than one-third of the company’s most recent quarterly loss.

Mazda could attract a lot of buyers. The Japanese auto maker expects net earnings to be $750 million for the current fiscal year. That’s net EARNINGS. The company also expects to sell 1.48 million cars this year. That would be a 9 percent raise in sales over 2007.

Rumors about Volvo getting the axe are becoming persistent.

Our take? So, would selling Mazda really help? Or would it be better to hold on because the company offers a plus to Ford’s bottom line?

Compact exec group test

BMW has facelifted the 3-Series in a bid to reclaim its compact executive crown. So, how does it shape up against Audi, Jaguar and Mercedes rivals?

It’s the premium car with mass appeal. BMW’s 3-Series wears an upmarket badge, but its popularity and sales success mean it has featured in the UK top 10 best-sellers list for the past three years. Described by bosses as “the heartbeat of the brand”, it accounts for a huge 45 per cent of BMW’s British sales.

So to keep the classy favourite at the top of its game, the saloon and Touring estate have had a mid-life update. The styling has been refreshed, interiors spruced up and engines tweaked, while as before there’s a choice of ES, SE and M Sport models. Nearly half the cars sold in the UK come in the latter trim, so we picked the revamped 330d M Sport for the model’s first UK test.

The six-cylinder 3.0-litre diesel has been revised to give more power and torque, while emissions and economy are also improved. But the competition is tough. Audi’s new A4 is better to drive than ever, and in racy S line trim the 3.0-litre TDI quattro is a real sports saloon to challenge the best BMW has to offer.

Don’t forget Mercedes, either: the C-Class has unique styling in Sport guise, and here our long-term C320 CDI faces up to the reworked BMW. Jaguar’s X-Type has recently benefited from a facelift, too, so this test gives us a chance to find out if it can still compete with the German class leaders

Ford Focus ST Mountune

Rating:

WHEN Ford revealed the Focus RS hot hatch at the British Motor Show in July, it soon had a queue of eager customers ready to place a deposit. Indeed, the firm has confirmed that 1,000 orders have already been taken for the newcomer, even though the RS won’t arrive in showrooms until early next year.

However, if you can’t wait for the 296bhp flagship to arrive, Ford could have a solution for you. The company has hired the services of Essex-based firm Mountune to provide a power upgrade for the current hot Focus, the ST. What’s more, the tweaks don’t affect the three-year manufacturer warranty.

The revisions include a new proAlloy intercooler and free-breathing K&N air filter, while the car’s on-board computer has been remapped to improve throttle response. As a result, the power increases from 222bhp to a healthy 256bhp, while torque rises from 320Nm to a whopping 400Nm from as low as 2,500rpm.

This extra thrust means that the benchmark 0-60mph sprint is covered in 5.9 seconds, an improvement of six-tenths of a second, while the 0-100mph time drops by nearly two seconds to 14.1.

On the road, the changes to the ST are obvious as soon as you floor the throttle. The car’s distinctive five-cylinder warble is now accompanied by a turbo whistle, while the Focus’s in-gear acceleration is simply astonishing as the engine races to its 6,500rpm red line.

Mountune is currently working on a stiffer suspension package for the ST, but the stock set-up copes well with the extra power. The standard car’s sharp turn-in and pliant ride remain intact, and the Focus is as docile as ever when you’re taking it easy.

The upgrades are priced at £1,120, excluding fitting. Added to the £18,545 price of the entry-level ST, it results in a car that offers RS-rivalling performance at a fraction of the price.
