Middle East Interested in Hummer?

hummers three

Can General Motors actually dump its Hummer behemoth to someone, anyone? So far those who appeared to show interest have since backed away from the idea.

Except now.

Well it appears that so-called “interest” in the area of the Persian Gulf have their eyes on Hummer after all. Apparently, there are a couple of investors querying GM about the brand.

The Middle East could be a perfect fit for Hummer. Gas prices are very low -- heck they own the stuff. And Hummer still has a reputation as a status symbol there.

People who think that a Middle East company will ultimately buy Hummer also point to the fact that Mubadala Development Company in Abu Dhabi bought 5 percent of Ferrari in 2005 and Investment Dar of Kuwait bought half of Aston Martin last year.

Our take? Question is: If a Middle East company doesn’t buy Hummer, then who will?

Mahindra & Mahindra gives Thumbs Down to Hummer

Mahindra Mahindra scorpio suv front left.jpg

General Motors has said that it has received inquiries from other auto makes about purchasing Hummer.

But no one is busting the doors down at the GM headquarters to get their hands on the expensive, gas-guzzling pachyderm. The latest to say "thanks , but no thanks" is Mahindra & Mahindra of India. You remember M&M, it was in the bidding for Land Rover and Jaguar along with domestic rival Tata.

Our take? So far GM's batting zero. Who are these so-called "interested party", GM?

Honda not charged up by Electric Vehicles

honda fcx concept front left II.JPG

While the other makes are clamoring to bring their electric vehicles to market, Honda has chosen to rely on tried and true technologies.

Though the automaker concedes that a hybrid would be adequate for 80% of most people's typical car usage, it foresees the electric car achieving no more than 1% of the auto markets today. Also, it claims that, despite advances in battery technology, it would take two tons of batteries to provide an all electric car performance and range qualities comparable to one of its Accords.

Our take? Honda is supposedly run by engineers. Is their lack of enthusiasm regarding EVs some form of sour grapes? Or are they aware of battery limitations better than even their rivals? C'mon, Honda, enough of the double speak.

Honda, Yamaha go Electric with Motorcycles

honda motorcycle closeup

Honda may not want to offer electric cars, but its motorcycle division apparently has no qualms about joining Yamaha in the offering of electric vehicles of the two wheeled variety.

Yamaha is apparently targeting some 62 miles of range and a 2010 introduction date, while Honda is targeting half of that and a year later. Both are to provide performance comparable to a 50cc motorcycle, so in a word, none.

They will be useless out of the urban jungle, but even with such modest performance goals the instant torque of electric motors should provide both perfect power delivery for the cut and thrust riding used in the urban landscape.

Our take? Don't look for these too reach our shores, and without the ability to filter/lane split outside of CA, they really proved no advantage in the urban centers of the states.

Hybrid Honda Insight shows automaker still trails Toyota

honda insight concept front left

The all-new Honda Insight hybrid was completely left choking in the dust as the Toyota Prius blasted off to sell over fifty times more vehicles than they did.

In a mad dash for cash, Honda is making the new Insight a five-seater like the Prius. Also with improved cost management, Honda will be undercutting the price of both tits hybrid Honda Civic and the Toyota Prius. The new platform will have the battery and control unit beneath the cargo space. The engine appears to be the typical gasoline/electric hybrid type.

Honda is aiming for the goal of 200,000 annual sales with half of them being sold in North America.

Our take? Whether or not Honda’s “insight” can really be called that, it feels like they’re simply following one step behind the Prius on a path that has already been trailblazed.

Honda Sees Profits as Dollar Gains Strength

honda civic coupe front left angle

Arguably, the Japanese makes have benefitted the most from the rise in fuel prices in the American market.

Their ability to offer models with best in0class fuel efficiency throughout the various classes has seen a resurgence in their sales, especially in small cars, here in the US, even though few cars in general are being purchased.

Leader among the brands, though, is Honda. Recent drops in oil prices and subsequent strengthening of the dollar has seen its stock value rise with the US economy, while profit have margins increased as the US accounts for more than half of the brand's business. Basically, the stronger the dollar is, the more money has been made.

Honda even beat out rival Toyota, even though Toyota offers the much loved Prius, its stock rising some 4.4 percent recently as opposed to Toyota's 2.9.

Our take? No doubt the fact that the Honda Civic became America's best seller played a part in that.

Honda Insight Concept Hybrid Vehicle to Debut at Paris International Auto Show

honda insight concepts three

TORRANCE, Calif. - Honda will reveal a concept version of its new small hybrid vehicle, to be named Insight, at the 2008 Paris International Auto Show, October 2, the company announced.

The new Insight Concept shares styling cues with the Honda FCX Clarity fuel cell vehicle and will provide an early look at the highly-anticipated five-passenger hybrid vehicle.

Going on sale in the U.S. next spring, the all-new purpose-built Insight will come to market at a price significantly below hybrids available today. From this unique position in the marketplace, the Insight will advance the affordability and accessibility of hybrid technology to a new generation of buyers.

"The original Honda Insight pioneered hybrid technology in the U.S. and remains a symbol of Honda's commitment to innovative technology and fuel efficiency," said Takeo Fukui, Honda Motor *** Ltd. CEO. "This new Insight will break new ground as an affordable hybrid within the reach of customers who want great fuel economy and great value."

The Insight Concept defines a new stage in the evolution of hybrid technology by utilizing a more cost-efficient version of Honda's Integrated Motor Assist™ (IMA™) hybrid technology, resulting in a new level of affordability for hybrid customers worldwide. Evoking the innovative styling cues first seen in the FCX Clarity, the Insight Concept is designed with a low center of gravity and a generous five-passenger cabin, offering the kind of driving pleasure and roomy interior that customers have come to expect from Honda. While the Insight Concept's aerodynamic design clearly identifies its fuel efficient purpose, its five-door access and folding rear seats speak to functionality that is designed to meet the needs of customers with an active lifestyle. The Insight Concept is a small, fuel efficient hybrid car that delivers big style and functionality with a healthy dose of fun.

Honda achieved a significant cost reduction in Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) components which should make Insight the most affordable hybrid vehicle to date. The production Insight will be offered as a five-door, five-passenger hatchback. Numerous technologies, including a function to assist customers in achieving more fuel efficient driving habits, will be applied to achieve a further improvement in real world fuel efficiency. With its affordable price, the new hybrid vehicle will represent the best value in its segment. Along with the Civic Hybrid, the new vehicle will be produced at an expanded hybrid vehicle production line at the Suzuka factory in Japan.

The Insight is expected to have annual global sales of 200,000 units per year - approximately 100,000 in North America. Following the launch of the new Insight, Honda also plans to introduce another unique sporty hybrid vehicle based on the CR-Z, first shown at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show. All together, Honda's global sales of hybrids should increase to approximately 500,000 units a year, or more than 10 percent of its total worldwide annual automobile sales.

The original Honda Insight was introduced in December 1999 as America's first gas-electric hybrid car. The first vehicle to break the 70-mpg fuel economy barrier, Insight was designed from the ground up to demonstrate the ultimate potential for fuel-economy in a two-seater subcompact automobile.

A leader in the development of cleaner, more fuel-efficient mobility products, Honda introduced the first low-emission gasoline vehicles; America's first gas-electric hybrid car and the world's first EPA-certified hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle, the FCX. In 2007, Honda was named "greenest automaker" by the Union of Concerned Scientists for the fourth straight time.

GMC Sierra V-8: Only for the Serious Trucker

2008 GMC Sierra Denali Crew Cab front right.JPG

For all those individuals out there who really need a truck, and use a truck the way it's meant, GMC has thrown itself into the mix as possible top dog with its latest 6.6 liter Duramax V-8 diesel.

660 lb-ft of torque and 365 bhp ensure that if you're behind the wheel of a new Heavy Duty Sierra, you won't be looking longingly at anyone else wishing you had more power to move your load. Those numbers give it a 10 lb-ft advantage over its Blue Oval and Mopar rivals, and a 40 bhp advantage over the Ram and 15 bhp over the Super Duty.

Best of all, the motor is covered by a best-in-class 5 year/100,000 mile warranty

Our take? Those are some serious, serious numbers.

2008 GMC Yukon Hybrid flattens Toyota Prius

2008 gmc yukon hybrid front left.JPG

General Motors got another boost to it confidence when its 2008 GMC Yukon Hybrid was rewarded with the 2008’s Best Engineered Vehicles by Automotive Engineering International.

Automotive Engineering International is a magazine published by the Society of Automotive Engineers and is based in Pennsylvania.
The magazine readers and editors appear most impressed with the two mode version of hybrid featured on the Yukon. The system, also used by Toyota, allows the vehicle to run on electricity and gasoline or a combination of both.

Both 2008 two-wheel drive Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid and the 2008 GMC Yukon Hybrid get 21 miles per gallon in the city and 22 mpg on the highway. The four wheel drive versions get 20 mpg in the city and highway.

The two mode hybrid technology will also appear on other GM
models in the coming years.

The award is based on votes of editors and readers of the magazine.

General Motors works with dealers to maximize space

gm-car-dealershipjpg

Earlier this year, we reported that General Motors appeared to be planning to cut down on the number of dealerships they have in the U.S. Right on the heels of that announcement comes word that the American auto maker wants to convert their dealerships into “superstores” appearing in major metropolitan areas to maintain a high profile.

The call for such a plan has become necessary because many dealership owners in big cities are actually selling their dealerships because the real estate on which they rest is more valuable. The “superstore” would put all GM brands under one roof and should help preserve their presence in cities where real estate is costly.

To create space for bigger showrooms to exhibit the vehicles at the “super stores” dealers will be asked to place their service and parts departments in other locations.

More details can be found at FP Posted. This might prove out successful. By combining space to exhibit their entire brand line, we would think the dealer network would be a lot more efficient. No wasted stores in the big cities. But there is the inconvenience of having parts and service somewhere else.

[Editors' Note: At an informal round table with Mark LeNeve, GM's North America VP of Sales, Service, and Marketing, at the Chicago Auto Show, he explained that the the automaker was, yes, helping certain dealership move their repair facilities offsite or pair various brands together (i.e., Chevrolet and Buick). However, this is in cooperation with the dealerships who, faced with rising real estate prices, want to maximize floor space as much as possible. There is no over-arching policy forcing such separation/mergers. GM continues its four major segments (i.e., Buick/GMC/Pontiac, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Saturn).]

2007 GMC Sierra/Chevy Silverado Truck Challenge: Tests

2007 toyota tundra front right.JPG

The first test I participated in was the trucks' towing and trailing capabilities. For this test, a 9,000 lb trailer (approximately 4 tons) was hooked to each vehicle. I tested, in order, the Ford F-150, the Toyota Tundra, the GMC Sierra, and the Chevrolet Silverado.

All the vehicles performed smoothly on the road. I was surprised, expecting more noise and body flex. The drive itself was almost car-like with none of the trucks sounding strained with their heavy load. The Ford, though, had the noisiest engine. Finally, the Chevrolet Silverado seemed the most strained during the obstacle part of the test where I drove quickly around various cones to simulate quick lane changes.

But the F-150's reaction was nothing compared to the Tundra. Not only did it suffer tire squeal, but my driving triggered its traction control system. I was quite surprised since none of the other three trucks reacted the same way and I had not changed my driving speed or pattern.

In the second half I raced the various trucks up a sloping road (7.2 % grade) to test their ability to quickly pass slower vehicles on mountain roads. Living in mountainous areas all my life, I could appreciate such capabilities.

The GMC Sierra easily bypassed the Ford F-150 and the Toyota Tundra. Engine noise from the former had me nearly shouting to my GM passenger and, again, the truck felt strained climbing the road. The Tundra's traction control activated again at launch, making it impossible for it to come close to the Sierra. I would later trigger the Tundra to shut down during the traction control part of the event.

I'll admit I was nervous during the next two tests. The first, Launch Feel and Braking, had me drive around 60 mph in a curve. While my fellow journalists may scoff at such an issue, I'm notorious among my family and friends for slowing down at the least sign of a bend in the road. But all the trucks handled beautifully, none of them straining at such high speeds; I never felt I would lose control.

After checking out the trucks' towing capacities, I tested each truck's braking system by decelerating from 60 miles per hour to a complete stop as quickly as possible. Images of being flung into the windshield danced in my mind as I slammed my foot on the brakes in my first test vehicle, the Nissan Titan. I shouldn't have worried; the vehicle stopped just fine without stress. I repeated the test in the Titan, Ford F-250, the GMC Sierra, and the Tundra. The Sierra did the best, shortly followed by the Tundra. The Titan's engine was noisy compared to GM and Toyota's offerings, though the F-250, with its diesel engine, was the worst in relative terms. The Ford also had the worst fit-and-finish compared the competition, with wide gaps in the interior paneling and mismatched shapes like the AC vents.

If the Launch Feel and Braking event made me nervous, the next event, the Ride and Handling one had me downright scared. In this test, I would drive the various trucks through a wet surface to test their traction control systems. Note that I have never, in over two decades of driving, ever trigged any of my vehicles' emergency systems. Yet here I was trying to do so deliberately and with much larger vehicles!

I drove the Chevrolet Silverado and Toyota Tundra, each time accompanied by a GM representative. In the first half of the test, I entered each truck into the wet surface at approximately 30 mph and used the anti-lock braking system to control it. The Chevrolet Silverado handled with aplomb; I never felt a loss of control and, in fact, barely felt the slippage. I had a more difficult time using the Tundra's anti-lock brake system; the truck literally kept wanting to slip away from my control. It took several judicious pumps on the brake pedal to stabilize it.

The second half had me test each truck electronic stability control system, or ESC. I drove the trucks into the wet surface again. This time, I took my foot off the accelerator to try to control it just by the steering wheel. Getting out of the slide was more difficult and I found myself overcompensating many times. While both trucks' systems ultimately made it manageable, the Tundra's system was definitely the noisier of the two. I also discovered that its systems were only active in 2WD mode; it could easily be disable if the Tundra switched to 4WD. Safety systems on the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado remain active in both drives, though a GM representative did reveal how to disable them for off-road travel.

Among all the tests, I found the Ride and Handling event the most informative since it revealed an oft-hidden but demanded feature of trucks: their safety systems. It's also one of the most difficult to duplicate among media vehicles, since most journalists rarely try to actually trigger a car's safety systems outside of controlled enviroments.

The last event tested each truck's traction control system. The event simulated a truck's capabilities in climbing a steep road in slippery conditions. I drove a Ford F-350, the GMC Sierra, and the Tundra.

The Sierra did fine, able to get its grip quickly on the "slippery road" (which constituted wetted tile). And while the Tundra eventually make the climb, it was quite noisy. Worse, it slipped on the surface and the engine sounded like it turned off; I had to switch to neutral to resume the climb.

The Ford F-350, with its limited slip differential, could not even make it up the road, stalling half-way through.

2007 GMC Sierra/Chevy Silverado Truck Challenge: Intro

112_news060828_02z 2007_GMC_sierra front_view.jpg

Last week, I attended the the GMC Sierra/Chevrolet Silverado Truck Challenge at GM's Milford Proving Grounds.

There, I had a chance to test-drive not only the all-new GMC Sierra (Denali trim) and Chevy Silverado, but compare them to the Ford F-Series, Nissan Titan, and, of course, the all-new Toyota Tundra. While GM had made the Dodge Ram available, I did not have the time to drive it.

This week, I will discuss the tests and my findings over several blog posts.

Geo Metro is Cool Again

1995 1997 geo metro front left.jpg

The old heap that is your hobby that has been taking up space in your garage and that your wife has been nagging you to get rid of but you could never bring yourself to do may finally be showing its value with the sky-high prices at the pumps these days.

Econboxes from the early 1990 such as the Ford Festiva, Hyundai Excel and Geo Metro are valued upwards of $6,000 today, says Kelley Blue Book. Quite the investment considering you only paid maybe around a thousand dollars to buy this thing to kill time in the first place. Some prices have risen as high as 30% for these rather old cars.

A 1993 Geo Metro XFI is EPA rated at 46 miles to the gallon; nearly the same as an ’08 Prius which starts at 21 grand. The Festiva and Excel both get mid 30’s mpg; their impressive mileage was made possible by smaller engines. Many of these 90’s cars have less weight, since they sometimes lack air bags and other safety features.

As the bottom rung of the auto industry, they were marketed to first timers, usually sold to students looking for a cheap buy for their first car. Many of them have met their fate in the jaws of the crusher since. Whether or not the gas mileage is worthwhile, the safety precautions should be taken into consideration, advise experts.

“Nick Skouteris, an Atlanta auto restorer, says he has fixed up and sold about 10 Geo Metros but is having trouble finding more at reasonable prices.” A Metro convertible he had set his sights on was going for $3,000 on eBay, complete with rust holes and 175,000 miles.

Our take? While you may not have been willing to be caught dead in one of these nerd cars in the past, the better mileage, and the cheapness of the car itself are heating the market to new heights.

GM to build new car based on Zeta platform

Holden Commodore SSV

General Motors Vice Chairman Bob Lutz announced at the Paris auto show last week that the automaker will build at least one car based on its new global rear/all-wheel-drive architecture.

Originally, plans to use the Zeta platform, developed by GM's Australian arm Holden and currently used in its Commodore sedan, as a basis for cars sold in North America had been shelved, but the increasing popularity of rear-wheel-drive thanks to offerings from Chrysler and Dodge caused the company to reconsider. Currently, the upcoming Camaro is the only Zeta-based car that is confirmed for the North American market, though there rumors going around about other cars such as the Holden Commodore will be used as the next Pontiac Grand Prix. The next-generation Chevrolet Impala, which in many ways is the Grand Prix' sister car, is also rumored to be Zeta-based.

Lutz also announced that the platform will be used to build a luxury car in China called the Buick Royaume. The Chinese market has been a bright spot for GM, where its Buick brand sees incredible popularity.

Our take? Anyone that follows GM has been aware of the trials and tribulations of the Zeta platform and its future in the North American market. The confirmation of future Zeta-based cars is good news and will allow GM to further differentiate its products from the competition and further leverage its performance pedigree. Combined with the increasing quality of GM's cars as of late, things seem to be looking up for the company.

2010 Ford Mustang Interior Stays True

2010 ford mustang interior

We have seen shots of the upcoming 2010 Ford Mustang and it's basially the same ole', same ole'.

First off, that is not a bad thing. The Mustang could not have become such an icon if it wasn't something people wanted, so who can blame Ford for wanting to adhere to its tried and true formula.

Consisting of reasonable price, good performance, and handsome looks, he car has been a stalwart model in Ford's product lineup. Though the price and performance have yet to be confirmed (expect modest increases in both like all new introductions) a sneak peak of the looks have been released by Ford.

Though detailing seems similar, there look is new. The dash once again is styled with a twin cowling type design, though it looks more like a modern interpretation of an old style as opposed to retro. The exterior seems to have followed a similar train of though, the detailing is crisper, cleaner, and more aggressive. The forward slant of the grill area harkens back to the late 60's Larry Shinoda penned Mustangs. Again seemingly more a modern interpretation than truly retro.

Our take? It seems Ford have shifted more towards a Camaro like interpretation of a retro themed pony car to ensure the continued success of the Mustang.

Ford Immersive Virtual Review Lab: Playing with Auto Designs

ford Virtual Reality Cave

If you are designing something for the real world, why not test it out in the virtual world first?

That’s the premise behind the Ford Immersive Virtual Review Lab. Thanks to computer technology, designers at Ford can play with their design concepts as though they are real when it reality they exist because of software and are stored in some kind of computer database.

The automaker claims that the technology assists in making the interiors of its cars more comfortable and helps to bring them to consumers some eight to 14 months faster than in the recent past.

Test vehicles are real in cyber space and as a person sits in a chair wearing special virtual reality glasses they actually experience being in a car traveling on a road of a city. Then designers can play with interior designs to see how they would effect the driver. Previously clay models or even larger mock ups were constructed. Virtual reality allows the company to forego all of that.

Ford is expanding its relationship with Cabela's, the world's largest outdoor outfitter, by offering a new Cabela's FX4 package for 2009. According to customer data, seventy-six percent of F-Series buyers hunt and fish and a key way for Ford to connect with those outdoor enthusiasts is as the official truck of Cabela’s for the last six years with products prominently placed at stores nationwide and featured in Cabela’s publications and TV programming. The Cabela's FX4 package features a unique two-tone paint scheme in five colors: Ebony, Oxford White, Forest Green Metallic, Royal Red Metallic and Silver Metallic with Sterling Grey Metallic lower body accents, running boards and wheel lip moldings. Custom mud flaps and unique Cabela's badging finish off the exterior.

The interior features standard cloth seats with the Cabela's logo or available Aniline leather seats with a unique two-tone embossed grain pattern. The center stack is finished with a dark Paldeo wood appliqué. All weather floor mats also wear the Cabela's logo. And for the avid outdoor enthusiast, additional lockable storage in the front console and underneath the rear seats is perfect for keeping equipment secure and out of sight.

Harley-Davidson™ F-450

Ford and Harley-Davidson team up again for a new Harley-Davidson™ F-450, the "Big Hog Daddy" of the road. As with the still available F-250/350 SRW models, each individually numbered Harley-Davidson™ F-450 features a unique blue-flame paint scheme that starts at the side vents and runs down to the box side of the truck. The flame design scheme is carried through to the interior gauges in the instrument panel. The custom perforated black leather wrapped seats, door panels and center console cover reveal blue leather underneath giving the same blue-flame effect as the exterior. Harley-Davidson™ badges are present on the fenders and tailgate, along with "Harley-Davidson" script located on the box side.

Tough Bed

Ford is offering Tough Bed, a unique, military-grade, factory-installed, spray-in bed liner for the first time on the 2009 F-Series Super Duty.

"Tough Bed is a smart solution for Ford Super Duty customers who want to better protect their most important asset – the pickup box," said Tom Aubrey, Ford F-Series Super Duty marketing manager. "Like the entire truck, Tough Bed stands up to the most stringent durability standards including those required by the U.S. Military – that definitely makes it 'Built Ford Tough.'."

According to the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA), installation of spray-in bedliners grew from 27 percent in 2004 to nearly 34 percent of all pickup trucks in 2006, and will continue to grow at a steady rate to nearly 40 percent in 2008.

Developed in partnership with PPG Industries, Tough Bed exceeds the standards of today's typical aftermarket spray-in bedliner solutions. This military-grade coating has been through the government's toughest blast mitigation testing to determine whether the material can with stand the force of a bomb blast. It has performed equal to or better than other protective coating systems at one-third the thickness.

The polyol-based elastomeric film and isocyanate hardener are applied to the pickup box by a precision, high-pressure, automated sprayer to ensure one smooth, even coat at a very low film thickness unlike the traditional hand-spray application of aftermarket bed liners.

The finer application ensures that the bedliner materials won't run or sag on the inside walls of the box in addition minimizing unnecessary weight. Tough Bed does not compromise Super Duty's class-leading cargo capacity or the installation of aftermarket assets such as tool boxes, tonneau covers and truck caps. The uniformly textured surface also helps minimize load slippage while delivering an exceptionally clean appearance.

The special bedliner material formula is immune to the effects of ultraviolet radiation and will not fade or chalk. It also protects against physical damage to the pickup box such as gouging, scratching, cracking and chipping. It is covered by a 3-year/36,000-mile factory limited warranty.

All F-Series Super Duty models are built at Ford's Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Ky.

Turbocharger and Supercharger, the Difference and Drawbacks

lincoln mks ford flex mountains

So if you have a newbie fascination with cars, here is a little 101 that might keep you from looking like a complete fool if you open your mouth to join in a conversation.

Turbochargers- Basically it uses wasted exhaust gases to turn a compressor which increases the amount of air that enters the combustion chamber. More air mixing with more fuel equals more power per ignition cycle. The turbo is somewhat more efficient than a supercharger because it uses waste exhaust; it also isn’t running all the time. Essentially it gives your smaller and lighter engine the same muscle as a larger car.

Superchargers- These are being constantly driven by a belt off of the crankshaft so long as the engine is running. This turns the supercharger’s compressor which forces more air into the cylinder. While less efficient because it’s always running, the advantage is the instantaneity of results. Turbochargers can have a lag time as they require a buildup of exhaust gases to rotate the turbine.

Well modern technology has diminished a turbochargers lag time considerably. Twin turbochargers used in Ford’s EcoBoost V6 are tuned to different rpm levels. There are pros and cons to either technology as well as your own personal preference, so research before actually trying to fit one of these in your car. Turbochargers are also expensive because they’re built to be heat resistant.

Ford Executive leaves to head Paper Company

resignation letter.jpg

Is "jumping ship" the beginning of a trend due to the outlandish status of the domestic auto industry? Or is it just a one shot deal, so to speak.

David Prystash, the Ford Motor Co. exec that oversees the company’s global cost-cutting efforts, has left the automaker to become chief financial officer of NewPage Corp, a paper company, based in Miamisburg, Ohio.

Our take? With sales of domestic autos in the tank and studies that show things won’t get better any time soon, perhaps we will see more auto industry execs jumping out of the auto industry altogether.

New Ford Fiesta set to sweep European Market

ford fiesta front stage.JPG

The strategy that Ford Motor Co. hopes will land it back in black ink is to develop cars that don’t appeal to just regions but to the entire world. In short, it wants to develop cars usable in every nation on the planet, not just for one country(ies).

It has begun to execute this strategy with the introduction in Europe of the Fiesta, with some auto analysts guessing that 400,000 Fiestas will be sold in Western Europe a year by 2009. Already European car magazine editors and pundits like the car and believe it will be a success. But whether it will be a so-called "world car" will be shown in 2010 when it will be introduced into the U.S. market.

This is not the first time Ford will be attempting to sell cars in the U.S. that were made in Europe. It tried to market European-made Mondeo in the U.S. as a Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique. It didn’t work because Americans found the cars to be too small. In the 1980s, Ford tried to sell the European-made Escort in the U.S. but that also failed.

So what's different now? Ford believes that things are extremely different today, especially with the price of gasoline and the demand from U.S. buyers for more fuel efficient vehicles.

If the Fiesta does turn out to be successful, then you can be sure that Ford will be playing the same strategy with other cars made by its European division. This could include the C-Max MPV and possibly the Ford Ka, which are being manufactured in Poland under a joint venture with Fiat. The Ka and C-Max MPV may reach the U.S. market by 2011.

Our take? What do you think of Ford's strategy with the Fiesta?

How Your Credit Scores Affect Buying Your Dream Car

ford dealership.jpg

Just as events have overwhelmed Ford, Chrysle,r and General Motors as far as their climb out of debt is concerned, these same conditions have also affected buyers’ ability to purchase a car.

We're talking about the current economic situation which may be causing some to pay bills late or even experience the foreclosure of their home.

All of these affects the FICO credit score of the potential buyer of a car, influencing the kind of deal you can make with such lenders as Ford (Ford Credit), General Motors (GMAC), and Chrysler (Chrysler Financial). Worse, due to the credit situation, more and more banks have tightened things up and are raising their qualifications for a loan.

Unless your credit is outstanding, you can forget about a 0 percent or a low interest loan, experts say. Self-employed and first time buyers are trusted less than in previous times. Interest rates for such buyers can be significantly higher than for a person with outstanding credit, forcing the buyer into a less expensive vehicle.

If you find yourself in this position, find a national or local bank that specializes in bad credit situations like bankruptcy or foreclosure. This way you can get pre-qualified for a loan. Be warned that such loan programs can include a very high interest rate from 14 to 23 percent. Don't be surprised if you may have to make a substantial down payment and show proof of steady employment.

Our take? The bottom line is this: Do some research about the credit market and your own credit standing before you actually visit a dealer. This way you won’t suffer through shell shock when you are in final talks to close a deal.

Ford still waiting for Hybrid Interest

ford escape hybrid logo.jpg

Don't expect further hybrid development from Ford Motor Co. any time soon.

Unlike rivals General Motors and even Chrysler, the domestic auto maker feels this way partly because competitors like Toyota were quicker to release such vehicles. Thus, it doesn't see joining the competition now isn’t necessarily worth it. In short, Ford doesn’t want to gamble. Said one exec, “We don’t believe in making cars for hundreds of people or thousands of people. They have to be affordable to our customers and capable of sustaining millions (of vehicles) in sales volume.”

Meanwhile, General Motors and Toyota go on to develop their plug in vehicles. Ford could possibly introduce its own hybrid between 2013 and 2020 said the general manager of hybrid vehicles for Ford.

Our take? It is apparent that Ford wants other auto makers to carry the load when it comes to growing the popularity of hybrid cars. Once there is “mass appeal”, then it will jump on the hybrid bandwagon. Sounds like the German automakers, doesn't it?

SEC doesn't fine Kerkorian despite misleading stockbuyers

gavel on desk.jpg

Way back in 2006, Tracinda Corporation, owned by investor Kirk Kerkorian, sold a stake in General Motors. The Security and Exchange Commission later charged Kerkorian for misleading potential stock purchasers about his plans to sell the stock.

Last week, the SEC ruled that Kerkorian had indeed misled and called for his company, Tracinda, to “cease and desist from committing or causing any violations and any future violations.” The federal agency said that when Kerkorian sold his 14 million shares of General Motors stock, he did not disclose that he had plans to sell 28 million shares. Later Kerkorian, through his company, sold another 14 million shares of GM stock, then a few days later sold the rest of his stake in General Motors.

Tracinda had announced at the time of the sale of the first 14 million shares that it might “acquire or dispose of additional shares” while it was in fact out to sell additional shares.

No fine was imposed. However, Tracinda did re-write its agreement governing its current 6.43 percent stake in Ford.

Ford Fuel Cell Program Gets Additional Two Years

2008 ford focus top front right city.JPG

Both pundits and analyst say it will take a while before fuel cell vehicles make their impact on the auto market. Well, companies like Ford continue to push to make these vehicles viable sooner than most expect. The automaker has been working on 30 Ford Focus fuel cell prototype vehicles for about 36 months.

Recently it announced has extended the program for another 24 months. The extension will allow Ford to collect more real world-testing data. The info will then be used to construct the next generation of fuel cell vehicles.

The program is in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy.

Our take? We wonder if Ford's also looking into the supply-side of the equation, i.e., service stations providing hydrogen. If not, then we don't see the research at this time as more useless waste of money.

Ford Mustang Badge Gets In Shape

ford mustang logo horse only.jpg

Well, it seems that the Ford Mustang is up for another style change

However, unlike prior revamps, it looks like this time the badge -- the racing mustang -- is also up for some refreshening. This marks the fourth revision of the logo since 1962. Changes to the pony car have also occurred in 1974, 1994 and 2005.

So what are some of these changes to the Mustang badge? Well, the new look will be a little more defined, adding a bit more muscle in the pony. It is also said the new badge will be crispier with more defined edges.

Our take? "Crispier with more defined edges?" What are we talking about here? Cooking a roast or something?

My First American Car?

Ford Focus 5-door

Okay. I have a confession to make. Most of my friends know me as a staunch conservative Republican, a meat-eating, suburban average Joe like millions of other 30-ish males across the country. But at the risk of sounding like a hypocrite, I've never owned an American car. One of them was American-built, but a foreign brand.

Ironically, some of the vehicles in my dream garage are American, and have been for some time. I have yearned for a Corvette since I was about 10 years old. It's still on my "wish list." Yet for the readily-attainable, buy-it-tomorrow models, the domestic manufacturers simply haven't gotten it together in terms of combining just the right combination of style, value, quality and performance that I've been looking for. They've come close, but none of them have hit the bullseye.

The first issue, is that up until recently, the Detroit 3 have avoided 5-doors like the plague. That just happens to be my favorite bodystyle for its unmatched practicality. I had high hopes for the Dodge Caliber when it was introduced, but was let down by its plasticky interior and pudgy weight. Ford just recently dropped the 3 and 5-door models of the Focus with its latest re-design, but supposedly will re-introduce them when the Euro-style model debuts for 2011.

Which brings me to the meat of this article. For the first time in quite a while, I think an American car could be a real contender for my automotive dollar. Granted, a lot of my hopes are driven by speculation and rumor, but what I'm seeing looks promising. I think I might just consider buying a new Focus when it's available. However, this is not an unconditional promise to Alan Mulally and friends. There are a few items I want to see on the model.

1) Sync - This has been such a runaway hit with the current Focus, it's a sure bet for the next model. I'll take it.

2) Powerful and Efficient Engine Options - EcoBoost sounds very promising, but a rumor I heard in the last few days about a 1-liter engine for the Focus leaves me yearning for more. Even with 15+ psi of boost crammed down its throat, I don't see a 1-liter engine producing much more than 130 horsepower. I'm sorry, I'm looking for some actual snappy performance with my new car. A 2-liter EcoBoost option on the Focus with between 220-250 horsepower would do nicely. Highway fuel economy of 30+ would be nice, too. I would also strongly consider a turbodiesel option. 150 horsepower and 240 lb./ft. of torque, and 40+ highway mpg sound like a reasonable benchmark.

3) Innovative Transmissions - Okay, this is the enthusiast geek in me coming out. Most consumers could probably care less about transmissions, but they're kind of a big deal for me. I'd like to have the choice of a double-clutch 6-speed, a traditional manual, and maybe a CVT. If it came down to two, the double-clutch and manual would be good options.

4) Premium Features - Okay, this is a rather hackneyed turn of phrase around automakers. Everything from "plush" carpeting to multicolored interior lighting has been called a "premium" feature. But to borrow a phrase from former Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart, "I know it when I see it." For me, premium features include an available in-dash Navigation system, Bluetooth connectivity (in Ford's case, bundled with Sync), optional HID or LED headlamps, and 4-wheel disc brakes. Power, heated or memory seats aren't "must-haves" in my book, especially not in the compact class. Give me the real goods that will make a difference in my daily drive.

5) Value for Money - I don't expect a fully pimped-out Focus to be $15,000. With the right equipment, I would be perfectly happy paying around $25,000 for a well-equipped compact. Mini has proven that you can sell a small car with premium features and make money. It seems the domestics are just now starting to realize this.

So, Alan. Do we have a deal? Should I put my name down now for a 2011 Focus EcoBoost 2.0 dual-clutch 5-door with Sync, Nav, HIDs and performance suspension?

Fiat turns to China for Possible Alliance

handshake.jpg

China’s rapidly growing auto market is attractive all around for automakers and investors alike.

Now comes works that Fiat is looking into a third deal with Chinese automakers. Talks of technical cooperation between the Italian automaker and China’s Guangzhou Automobile Industry Group have been occurring as Fiat strives to make progress in China’s growing market. Unlike GM and Volkswagen, who have reaped in hefty profits, Fiat has so far made little progress in that important market.

Fiat is currently in discussion to set up a car manufacturing venture with Chery Automobile as well. Late 2007, Fiat pulled out of a losing deal with Nanjing Automobile.

Our take? Don’t you find it interesting that these deals aren’t coming the U.S.’s way?

Ford's Way Forward Means Getting Smaller, More MPGs

ford fiesta front stage.JPG

It seems like Ford will be concentrating on small cars in the immediate future.

Execs say that there has been a convergence of elements -- hig gas prices which builds a demand for smaller cars with better fuel economy and affordable technologies for said vehicles. They see Americans buying small cars as long as they are comfortable and have the same quality offered in small cars sold in Europe.

So, look for more “exciting designs,” fuel economy, “excellent craftsmanship” and “innovative” infotainment technology.

Our take? Once you get pass the "hypespeak", expect Ford not only to roll out more fuel-efficient compacts, but curtail its SUV and truck line for a while. Ford CEO Mulally has been well-documented in his admiration of Toyota; it looks like his implementation of the successful Japanese automaker's techniques are bringing in the green. Or at least getting the company closer to the black in terms of profit.

BMW turns to Italy for Future Small Car Parts, Engines

mini colorado concept front left.jpg

More and more auto makers are partnering in order to manufacture and distribute parts in a more cost effective manner.

Italian auto maker Fiat and the German car maker BMW are the latest to join the grown trend. Word is that the two will be coupled to produce platforms and components. They are also considering the joint use of components and systems in the MINI (owned by BMW) and Fiat's Alfa Romeo vehicles.

Reports also say that Fiat and BMW will be thinking about developing new gasoline and diesel engines together.

Fiat continues to whoo Daimler for partnership

fiat bravo front right

The drive for more efficiency in production and operation (and, hopefully, for more profits) has caused car makers around the world to seek partnerships for all sorts of things. Now comes word that Italian car maker Fiat is talking to German car maker Daimler about “everything.”

According to Reuters, Fiat is looking for a partner to help it with, well, just about everything there is in car manufacturing. And the German auto maker seems to be in its crosshairs because it is said to be looking for help with its next generation of Mercedes-Benz A-Class and B-Class compact cars.

A partnership between Daimler and Fiat is not a new idea. Fiat signed a partnership agreement with Daimler worth $3.49 billion to supply truck engines.

Our take? Oh, the world of peaceful co-existence or the whole is worth more than the sum of its parts.

Ferrari Builds Exclusivity

ferrari front right.JPG

Well, they say that everyone has a price.

According to Jalopnik, the exotic luxury automaker will construct your very own Ferrari if you pay the right amount of money. And when we say your own Ferrari we mean your own, exclusive, no-other-car-on-the-road like-it model.

Of course, there are always strings or what Ferrari calls "limitations". It will not make, for example, any crossover/SUV, station wagon, or four-door. And you have to use the airbags and chassis of an existing Ferrari model.

More details can be found above. Our take? Ferrari's conditions don't sound too bad. Heck, if you are buying a Ferrari you don’t want the a-typical SUV, station wagon, or sedan anyway. And building your own exclusive car on an existing Ferrari chassis is cool in its own right.

Anyone have a million lying around?

Ferrari California GT Makes Internet Debut

ferrari california gt virtual debut

Perhaps in the good old days of the 1950s through the 1990s auto makers would unveil new models by holding some kind of special event at their dealerships or spending millions of dollars on a TV, radio and print media advertising campaign.

But this is the Twenty First Century and things are different now. Specifically, we have the Internet. So It shouldn’t be to anyone’s surprise that more and more auto makers are turning to the internet to launch new models.

Ferrari introduced its new California GT on in a webcast on Thursday, September 19 and continues to replay it on its website. Just go to www.ferraricalifornia.com.

The car will also appear at the Paris Auto Show in October.

Ferrari surprises car lovers with possible V8 FXX

112_0710_01z ferrari_fxx_evoluzione front_drivers_profile.JPG

Time marches on and people live for the moment, not the past. They say, “What have you done for me lately.” For these people Ferrari is now considering a successor to its Enzo Supercar that may carry a twin-turbo V8 or V12 powertrain . The car is expected to be released in 2012.

Followers and owners of Ferraris are downright shocked that a V8 can ever be considered as the engine to power any Ferrari supercar. But Ferrari GT technical director Roberto Fedeli said that Ferrari is no longer interested in “power wars.” This is the first time that a V8 may appear in a Ferrari since its first supercar engine -- the F40 -- was unveiled.

Fedeli said that it is a weight thing. The design needs to follow the shape of a weight-to-power curve with more power or less weight. He said that if it is decided that the car have the same weight-to-power ratio as the FXX, then it wants to save the maximum weight and that calls for the use of an all-new V8 engine.

So, since no final decision has been made as to one engine or the other, development goes on in parallel of a V8 and V12 Enzo-style supercar. Fedeli said that the FXX will be used to test some innovations that the company has in mind for the new car.

Our take? Like when Bob Dylan started singing rock as opposed to folk songs in the 1960s which caused folk song fans to demonize him, is Ferrari opening itself to criticism by racing purists for even considering using a V8 in a supercar?
