Audi's MINI fighter is to be an important part of the brand's product portfolio. With a worldwide shift by consumers towards smaller more efficient autos, Audi is looking to its A1 to provide it with a car to appeal those consumers who'd like a bit of luxury thrown into the mix as well.
It is now known that, although important to the brand, the A1 will not be given a bespoke platform but instead be based upon a corporate platform. In this case, the A1 will share its underpinnings with the SEAT Ibiza, though, much in the way the TT can share a platform with the Golf/Rabbit, it will gain unique parts and tuning.
Unlike the rear twist-beam suspension of the SEAT, the A1 will gain a fully independent rear suspension to go unlike with the platform's MacPherson struts.
Power will come from a series of gas, diesel, and hybrid systems. 1.2 liter to 1.4 liter gas motors will be offered, as well as diesels ranging from 1.6 to 2.0 liters. The hybrid system will consist of the 1.4 liter gas motor coupled to an electric motor and batteries.
Our take? If Audi can make a car as dynamically brilliant as the MINI, their style, interiors, and greater power train option should make a winner.
