It seems like every auto maker on the planet is looking for ways to save on gasoline.

And who came blame them as consumers suddenly wake up and -- gasp! -- come to their senses and abandon horsepower to the meat-grinding factory.

Land Rover is one of the latest to join said fuel efficiency brigade. The Tata-owned automaker will be adding a stop/start system on its new Freelander 2 TD4_e which was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show this month.

The system works by automatically shutting off the engine when it is idling. This is expected to help the vehicle to reduce CO2 emissions by 8 percent and to save as much as 20 percent of fuel in urban driving.

Land Rover/Jaguar has invested 700 million pounds ($1.2 billion) in new technologies that has led to the development of the stop/start system.

Other features include the diesel ERAD hybrid, which features electric rear axle drive that is supposed to lower emissions and enhance all-terrain performance.
