Lamborghinis should look like the end result of a contest.
A room full of 10-year olds are given a crate of Coca Cola, a box of crayons and an hour to draw the ultimate sports car. The best drawing, or maybe just all of them, are given to a crew of over-espressoed designers who are told the best physical rendering of the drawing wins a lifetime pass to Fiorano. And they're off!
Ever since Lambo fell under control of Volkswagen, the general quality, particularly in terms of drivability, skyrocketed. However that old hyper-active madness evaporated. So maybe someone was secretly pumping nitrous into the design offices when the new Reventon was being designed. And certainly when they came up with the price - a tidy $1.4 million.
Motor Trend reports the new Lambo broke cover at Frankfurt yesterday, and jaws hit the floor.
The jaded enthusiast might complain it's nothing more than a reskinned Murcielago LP640 (and anyone who describes any iteration of the LP60 as "merely" deserves to have their enthusiast card pulled). But the visual impact is like nothing since the Countach 5000QV. There are no wings, but none are necessary as the fighter plane connotation is complete with just the shape of the nose, the creases leading into the rear brake intakes and the long, low, windshield. The effect continues inside with bespoke gauges and interior trim. This is nothing less than a road going F-22 Raptor. Built by Italians.
And the price. Yes, $1.4 million is a lot of parmesan, but considering only 20 will be built, we can see this as a major investment for the right buyer. We can also see it cropping up on the Pebble Beach Concourse in 30 years or so with Best In Show honors.
Spec wise, it's essentially identical to the LP640, with a 650 hp V12 exploding the machine to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds and topping out at 212 mph. Nothing to sneeze at, to be sure.
Madness.
