The Jeep Renegade concept may just show where turnkey off-road vehicles are headed.
Jeep has long been a standard for the drive off the showroom floor to the trails ability, and the Renegade would be much of the same. The biggest difference though, is that the Renegade main power comes from two electric motors.
Though the Renegade also has a small 115 hp I-3 diesel to help create a hybrid power train of sorts, in fact it's a main contributer to the Renegade's 400 mile range, the main motivation comes from an electric motor in each axle. A Li-ion battery pack allows for 40 miles of electric-only range.
The electric motors may actually prove beneficial off-road however. Peak torque occurs at 0 rpm (hence their use in trains), and the numerous situations in which engine braking is used to slow the vehicle off-road would actually work to recharge the batteries.
Coincidentally, the upcoming Land Rover LR-X offers its own version of the hybrid-electric system, and touts many of the same benefits.
Our take? Imagine off-road in an electric Jeep, you'd actually be able hear nature as well.
